Webster-Balsam, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA

Dimensions: 7.8 cm x 5.4 cm x 4.5 cm

7.8 x 5.4 x 4.5 cm. Garnierite is the name for a green nickel ore which is found in pockets and fissures of weathered ultramafic rocks (serpentinite, dunite, peridotite). It forms by lateritic weathering of ultramafic rocks; it consists of the magnesium-rich phyllosilicates serpentine, talc, chlorite and smectite in which a high percentage of magnesium is substituted by nickel. This is an old-time specimen from mining in North Carolina.

01151810017362684917329.jpg
Puerto Rico, USA

Dimensions: 5.5 cm x 4.1 cm x 2.8 cm

5.5 x 4.1 x 2.8 cm. Very rare garnierite from Puerto Rico, from where specimens of any type are rare. Garnierite is a generic name and synonym for nepouite, pimelite and willemseite, rare green nickel ores which formed as a result of lateritic weathering of ultramafic rocks (serpentinite, dunite, peridotite). They occur in many nickel laterite deposits in the world (MINDAT). This is a solid blocky mass of mottled green garnierite. Rare, perhaps unique material collected in the 1940s. Ex David Burgess Collection, for whom Burgessite is named. Acquired from respected rarities dealer Pequa Minerals (Josef Vajdak). From Corozal, a locality not listed in Mindat. Garnierite is not listed for any locality in Puerto Rico.
