Bazirite from USA

0PL-9CEBazirite BaZr(Si3O9) , Sanbornite BaSi2O5 , Pyrrhotite Fe1-xS , Quartz SiO2

Rush Creek, Big Creek-Rush Creek Mining District, Fresno County, California, USA

Field of View: 16 mm

Small pale yellow crystals imbedded in sanbornite reflective cleavages associated with pyrrhotite and quartz. The bazirite is fluorescent bright blue-white under SWUV but are difficult to see in natural light. Specimen collected 6/4/12 by Robert E. Walstrom from the main pit area of the Snow Cap Claim. Pale yellowish micro crystals of Bazirite imbedded in white Celsian with dark metallic Pyrrhotite grains. It is pretty hard to see the Bazifrite in a photograph but when placed under UVSW it produces a bright blue-white fluorescence. Numerous crystals are scattered throught the celsian. Specimen Collected 1973 by Robert E. Walstrom from fly rock produced by road construction. Photo: Robert E. Walstrom. Camera: Dino-Lite AD-4013TL digital.

An interesting matrix piece with tiny crystals of bazirite and fresnoite. The only way to see these is via UV light: under shortwave UV the bazirite fluoresces blu, while the fresnoite yellow/green. They are very small, so, still, they are quite hard to identify. It is easier to distinguish between the two with longwave UV: the bazirite fluoresces red, while the fresnoite is not fluorescent. The overall matrix is also quite fluorescent in the UV range, creating that distracting blue/violet/white background fluorescence. The labels says there is also celsian, but I’m not sure which one it is.

Shortwave fluorescence.

California Walstromite Bazirite - SW and MW

From the Esquire #8 mine, Lower Prospect in Big Creek, CA comes this 4.7" wide specimen of walstromite on bazirite.

Contains:
Walstromite (FL+PHOS Orange >UVbc)
Bazirite (FL Blue >UVbc)

The walstromite is very phosphorescent with a long duration which is typical of silicate minerals that phosphoresce.

Shown under UVbc light.

Key:
WL = White light
FL = Fluoresces
PHOS = Phosporesces
UVa = 368nm (LW), UVb = 311nm (MW), UVc = 254nm (SW)
'>' = "stimulated by:"
