(1) Radiation can damage cells at the molecular level through direct ionization or indirect free radical formation. DNA is particularly susceptible to radiation damage. (2) Double strand breaks in DNA are difficult for cells to repair and can lead to cell death, while misrepaired breaks may cause mutations. (3) Radiation exposure can also damage cell membranes and chromosomes, with effects ranging from structural aberrations to nonviable cells. Membrane damage may alter permeability and organelle function.
