Mission

The SSP Early Career Subcommittee (ECSC) engages with and serves early career professionals in scholarly communication by providing educational resources to help them develop their careers. The ECSC also aims to help early career professionals expand their networks and build a foundation for career success through increased presence and participation in SSP and other industry groups and events.

Early Career Publishing Professionals Communities of Interest Network (ECP CoIN) 

The ECP CoIN offers a dedicated space for individuals new to the publishing field to network, learn, and grow. Our goal is to enhance our collective understanding of various topics, share best practices and ideas, and build connections with other early-career professionals. During our monthly virtual meetups, whether for general networking or specific educational topics, we encourage questions and engagement while allowing attendees to chat. ^


 

The Early Career Chew” Newsletter 

A free newsletter summarizing the latest industry news, career resources, and events each quarter is available exclusively on LinkedIn. It is produced in collaboration with four leading professional organizations: the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), the Council of Science Editors (CSE), the International Society for Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE), and the STM Association (STM). ^


 

Early Career Development Podcast 

A podcast series for early-career publishing professionals, co-hosted by Meredith Adinolfi (Cell Press) and Sara Grimme (Digital Science). This series offers advice and commentary on how these professionals can enhance their skill sets, broaden their networks, and seize opportunities. It features interviews and insights from seasoned professionals on navigating a career in the diverse and ever-changing landscape of scholarly communications. ^


 

Early Career Professional Profiles

Professional Profiles highlight the distinct career paths and insights of SSP members, showcasing their career achievements, challenges, and valuable resources and websites. Explore our professional profiles across various career stages and industry sectors, including early career professionals in the first 1-5 years of their careers, for a look into the wide range of scholarly communications roles and opportunities. ^


 

Apply for an SSP Fellowship 

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) offers a highly competitive Fellowship to 12 students and early career professionals each year. Students studying publishing, librarianship, and information science, as well as early career professionals in their first four years in the scholarly communications industry, are encouraged to apply. Check back for next year’s deadline. ^


 

Early Career Webinars 

The SSP webinar program offers a series of highly informative and thought-provoking webinars aimed at challenging and stimulating conversation. Covering timely topics and held regularly throughout the year, our one-hour webinars are available for viewing for 180 days after the live broadcast. One or two sessions each year are dedicated to topics particularly relevant to early career professionals. ^
