Governments and key partners to gather at ECOSOC to advance innovative and transformative actions for a sustainable future

The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the UN’s principal organs, provides a unique platform for Member States, the UN system, civil society, and other stakeholders to come together to address the world’s most pressing challenges

Two events – the ECOSOC Partnership Forum (27 January) and the ECOSOC Coordination Segment (28-29 January) – will help set the stage for the work of ECOSOC in 2026. As mandated by resolution 75/290 A, the outcome will be a non-negotiated factual summary which reflects discussions and strategic proposals that have been made during the Partnership Forum and the Coordination Segment.

THE 2026 ECOSOC PARTNERSHIP FORUM

WHAT: The 2026 ECOSOC Partnership Forum will be held under the annual theme of the Economic and Social Council “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for a sustainable future for all”. The Forum will put a spotlight on forward-looking actions and innovative partnerships by governments and other stakeholders to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address new challenges.

Featuring a plenary session, four SDG Action Segments and a story-driven panel, the Forum will place special emphasis on the SDGs under review at the 2026 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), namely Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal 9 (Industry Innovation and Infrastructure), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

THE 2026 ECOSOC COORDINATION SEGMENT

WHAT: The 2026 ECOSOC Coordination Segment will carry out its unique role of coordinating the United Nations system and its subsidiary bodies in support of sustainable development.

The Segment will comprise four in-person meetings, featuring a mix of panel discussions and interactive dialogues. Discussions will cover the following areas: (i) ECOSOC at 80: Lessons learned and important milestones; (ii) Keeping pace with a changing world and translating commitments into coordinated action; (iii) ECOSOC as a gateway for all stakeholders; (iv) The ECOSOC system working together toward the 2026 HLPF; and (v) ECOSOC after 80: strategic imperatives for the future.
