Andy McLellan grew up in rural Buckinghamshire in the 1970s and 80s, and studied Environmental Science before going on to complete a PhD in Biology at the University of York looking at plant diversity in a limestone grassland in the Peak District National Park.
He worked for a year as a research biologist at the Institüt fūr Umweltwissenschaften (Environmental Science Institute) at the University of Zürich before becoming ill with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, a disease from which he has yet to recover.
In the intervening years, he has been married and has three teenage children. He reads a lot, knits hats and practices Sōtō Zen Buddhism.
Andy has published haiku in a number of contemporary short form poetry journals such as cattails, hedgerow, Blithe Spirit, Otata and Presence, and is a member of the British Haiku Society and United Haiku and Tanka Society. This blog showcases some of those haiku and related forms (haibun, haiga and tanka).
Shore/lines as a title comes from an interest in the between places of life and nature, and the fact he lives in a part of the UK surrounded on three sides by the sea.
That’s fun!
Hello Andy, best of success with ‘1-a-day.’ Certainly an ambitious challenge, but well worth the effort in discipline and creativity. Made the same resolution for one verse each week and found myself with two years of verse. I began to run out of ideas around mid-November of the second year. I have found it interesting to look back on what has become an ‘alternative’ diary of sorts. Looking forward to reading of your travels. All the best. P.A.
I love this! I can’t wait to start receiving the daily haiku. You’re such a dear. :o)
Brilliant, your haiku are lovely.
I like how your poetic aptitude has increased as your meditation practice has took form.
