Africa's largest network of #CivicTech and #OpenData labs building digital democracy solutions.

About us

Code for Africa (CfA) uses technology and #OpenData to build digital democracies that empower citizens. We give citizens actionable information for better-informed decision making and digital tools to amplify their voices, so that they can hold the authorities (both governmental and corporate) to account. We do this in a number of ways: first, by liberating the data currently locked up in governments and corporations, and using this information to build open data / open government digital "backbone" infrastructure. Second, we embed technologists into frontline civic watchdogs, the mass media, public entities, and grassroots citizen organisations to help create the tools, skills, and data necessary to engage meaningfully with the power elite. And, third, we foster civic engagement by incubating digital storytellers and amplifying citizen voices, building digital democracy services that encourage active citizenry, and supporting evidence-based public discourse. We have over 140 full-time in-country staff at innovation labs in 28 African countries: Bénin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Côte d’Ivoire, Chad, DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinée, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Niger, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe. And, we have a small number of staff in non-African countries, including Georgia, Italy and the USA. CfA also has active projects in a further five African countries. CfA is funded by a coalition of human rights defending philanthropies, global technology platforms, media organisations and citizen watchdog bodies interested in public accountability.

  • 🇧🇫 Burkina Faso says it is breaking free from foreign dependence. The data suggests otherwise. Since the 2022 coups, the country’s leadership has framed sovereignty as a rejection of foreign aid and debt. But official figures from government institutions show a different trajectory. 🔎 Public debt has risen by nearly 39% since 2021, reaching over 8.3 trillion CFA francs, with external debt now accounting for more than 40% of the total. At the same time, multilateral aid has surged to $1.5 billion in 2024, and major national projects remain largely financed by international partners. 💡 This analysis by Adom Online draws on official government data to examine the gap between rhetoric and reality: https://cfa.fyi/NvguC0f Produced with support from the African Academy for Open Source Investigations (AAOSI) and the African Digital Democracy Observatory (ADDO).

  • 👩🏾💻 Cybercrime is rising across Africa, but the systems meant to stop it are still struggling to keep up. As digital adoption accelerates, cybercrime is becoming a growing share of reported crime in parts of the continent. Yet critical gaps remain: only 30% of African countries have incident reporting systems, and 90% say they need significant improvements in prosecuting cybercriminals. 🔗 Learn what's driving cybercrime and why response systems are falling short: https://cfa.fyi/RYnZyOr

  • TAEF statement on the cancellation of RightsCon 2026 This time last week, a gathering of more than 2,600 participants, including 1,200 online attendees, representing over 150 countries and 750 institutions, was cancelled only days before the event was set to take place. The cancellation of RightsCon, initially presented as a "postponement", erased a year's worth of work invested in organising an event of this magnitude. Code For Africa (CfA) stands firmly with The African National Editors Forum (TAEF), Zambian civil society and the wider digital rights community in condemning the cancellation. The community is calling on the Zambian government to provide a full and honest account of what happened, apologise to the organisers and partners, and offer credible guarantees that Zambia remains committed to democratic freedoms, including freedom of expression, assembly, media freedom, digital rights and open civic debate.
