A lot of work goes into a programme like Thungela’s Thuthukani programme. At the centre are entrepreneurs building businesses that can stay in operation and become sustainable. Thungela received a Merit in Community Transformation at the 2026 Mark Awards. Thuthukani supports entrepreneurs and small businesses in mining communities to strengthen their businesses, access opportunities and create economic value in the communities around them. 📚🤝 Strengthening Foundation Phase education through collaboration Thungela, the Federer Foundation and the Mpumalanga Department of Education convened the Mpumalanga Foundation Phase Collaboration Symposium, bringing together businesses, funders and implementation partners committed to improving early learning outcomes across the province.   The symposium provided a platform to align efforts, share insights and strengthen partnerships in support of in support of the Department of Education’s key Foundation Phase priorities. Creating supportive learning environments through structured collaboration In 2025, through the Thungela Education Initiative we signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the University of Pretoria - Faculty of Education to deliver structured psychosocial support intervention to 45 no-fee-paying schools in Mpumalanga. The programme commenced with introductory onboarding sessions in February this year, where UP students and academic staff engaged with school principals, educators, and School-based support teams (SBSTs). These sessions provided valuable insights into each school’s unique context, challenges, and psychosocial support needed. The onboarding phase was followed by a week-long intervention programme at 10 beneficiary schools. During these engagements, learners participated in scholastic and behavioural support sessions tailored to the needs and concerns identified by educators and social workers from KFM Consulting. The programme concluded with close-out sessions that also empowered parents and caregivers with practical tools and strategies to better support learners at home.
