Wulfenite from Slovenia
DHX-C6HWulfenite Pb(MoO4)
Union Mine, Mežica Mines, Mežica, SloveniaDimensions: 40 mm x 30 mm x 30 mm
GLR-YR1Wulfenite Pb(MoO4)
Mežica, SloveniaDimensions: 58 mm x 27 mm x 27 mm
Largest Crystal Size: 5 mm
Group of crystals with a clearly hemihedral habit, having a very sharp termination at one end and the opposite side finely polycrystalline. Very lustrous, with a vivid color, on matrix. An excellent classic, very characteristic of the locality but which at the same time has a very original crystal habit.
Mežica (Miess), Mežica Municipality, Carinthia Region, Slovenia.

37U-08XWulfenite Pb(MoO4)
Helena mining district, Črna na Koroškem, SloveniaField of View: 2 cm
Closeup of a miniature specimen. Note the characteristic pyramidal bifurcations in the central zone of the leftmost crystal, so typical of Mezica wulfenites - here overgrown by a glassy orange zone. The seeming absence of (001) and of any crystal forms at one end of the crystals is consistent with Mezica wulfenite being hemimorphic (tetragonal disphenoidal, -4), and repetitive twinning on (001) is evident in the thin sandwiched layers beneath the bifurcations. Specimen collected by Igor Dolinar.

Helena mining district, Črna na Koroškem, SloveniaField of View: 1.8 cm
Detail showing variety of crystal habit and color zoning in wulfenite from the Helena Mine, Slovenia. On other portions of the specimen, the wulfenite is a bright orange-peach color. Originally it was disfigured by clots and granules of calcite (see last photo in series), but these were removed with vinegar, which greatly improved the luster of the wulfenite.
4TH-JM0Wulfenite Pb(MoO4)
Helena mining district, Črna na Koroškem, SloveniaDimensions: 90 mm x 75 mm x 50 mm
Largest Crystal Size: 4 mm
A specimen from one of the best and most classic localities for Wulfenite. Numerous dipyramidal and deep orange doubly terminated crystals, with parallel growths.
The specimen is from a German collection and under the label we found an older label from the Freiberg School of Mines.
Helena Mine, Crna (Schwarzenbach), Mežica (Miess), Slovenia.

This is a special specimen for several reasons. Firstly, it is a beautiful piece from an old and historic locality; with large crystal size and intense color for the locale. It is also actually an older specimen of far higher in quality than anything found recently on the old mine dumps here. Secondly, it has a unique crystal habit, with the modified edges you can see so clearly. Finally, most specimens from here feature crystals jumbled together in a solid mass. THIS ONE has the rare quality of individual crystals, perched on the matrix. I had not seen equal quality , for my tastes, for sale back in 2001 when I sold this to Ed out of the WH Leithauser Collection, and I still haven't seen a better one for sale. Comes with custom base.

GF2-UQ1Wulfenite Pb(MoO4)
Helena mining district, Črna na Koroškem, SloveniaThe photograph shows one of the key specimens after which the Doroteja-Law was determined on this locality. The crystal on the top of this 30 mm specimen has deep reentrant angles, which is the main sign of twinning. The corners of the crystals are clearly open, as if the two pyramids would not want to grow together anymore. Detwinning occurs in late growth stages, when the conditions for growth of the twin-plane are interrupted, and the crystal starts to thicken and develop symmetric pyramidal terminations. The difference in polarity and the lack of dopant that caused the twinning, inflict the separation of crystal domains at the contact plane. Find and collection A. Rečnik.
