Grayson is an incredible boy.  He has a quick & dry sense of humor which sometimes catches us so off guard & cracks us up.  He is cautious & careful, timid & shy in front of big crowds, but playful & loud when he feels comfortable.  He is smart, inquisitive, naturally wants to lead, independent, and does not love to try new things.  Because of this we have to force new things (riding the bus, picking a sport or new activity) & once he gains some confidence about it, he does great!  He likes his routine & does best with a schedule.  He loves school, but loves home more.  He likes sleeping at home in his own bed-and having mom & dad around.  He's super helpful with Fischer & is a generally good listener (especially good at school & church).  He's begun asking to say the family prayer almost every night & meal and I love it.  He has a strong sense of what is right & wrong and usually wants to do what is right.

 I feel like the first 4-5 years of his life I was way too hard on him.  I had this vision with the first child on how everything should be/go/look, and I regret so many things.  This last year has included many changes on both our parts to heal some of the bad behaviors I've adopted & created because of my attitude.  It will take time, but I'm grateful for second (and seventieth) chances, forgiveness from a child, and a bright shining future.

Other quirks & endearments about Grayson:
Getting awesome about trying new foods.  LOVES tuna from the can and most fish.  Veggies are still the biggest struggle.
He is a major germaphobe.  He HATES them.  He washes his hands more than any person I know and often has dry knuckles because of it.  If Beckham breathes his air, toots in his direction, or doesn't wash his hands, whatever Grayson is doing/eating/around is ruined.  It's crazy!  I'm grateful he wants to be and likes being clean, but sometimes this is a cause for frustration, especially in public restrooms, etc.
He does NOT like apologizing.  He won't apologize if he's not sincere.  We're working on this. (;
He is a creative personality & has a great imagination.

Grayson's primary love language is definitely quality time + acts of service.  He is not a touchy feely kid, although he likes late night talk time in bed & for me or Zac to lay with him & scratch his back.  He is more cuddly with Zac than anyone else. He is grateful when receiving gifts, but he'd much rather have our undivided attention talking, playing, or watching/interacting with him doing things he likes.  Action speaks much more loudly to him than words. We love you Grayson and it is a joy to have you in our home!

Gray's Indy Party {1.18.13}

Today was Grayson's first "friend" birthday party.  Our rule is family parties through age five & friend party on even years starting at age six.  He was pretty excited & I included him in lots of the planning which he really liked.

I told him he could invite 11 people and asked him who he wanted to have come & his list said:
Beckham, Jaeger, Josh, Zachary, Max, Chase, Keegan, Amity, Olivia, Kira, & Treyce.
There are many other kids we'd have loved to have come, but I thought 12 seemed overwhelming enough for the first year! (;  I was so happy Beckham made the list & he was too!

We decided on an Indiana Jones theme (of course) & I scoured Pinterest for ideas.  My favorite and most used post was HERE.  She did a great job & I didn't go quite as elaborate as her, but still enjoyed what we did do.

the invite:

I did most the prep work beforehand, but the day of Grayson helped me finish up some details.  He cut all the grapes for the eyeball soup & loved being included in the planning stage.

Wendy & Newell were kind enough to let us use their new garage which was perfect.  We borrowed a big propane heater from my dad & it heated the garage super well & fast.  Fischer got to hang out with Grandma which he loved!

All invited came except Amity, so Lyla & Lucy took her place.  After all the guests arrived, I started by reading a letter from Indiana Jones.  Everyone got a fedora for their treasure hunt & we followed the clues:
Whip practice:  this was comical.  Max loved snapping it & even gave a quick tutorial on proper whip snapping!, Grayson was a huge cheerleader for everyone else, the girls were more timid &  everyone had a blast.

Pankot palace buffet: dipping their hands in eyeball soup (cut up grapes in water), & snake guts (spaghetti).  A few of the kids-including Beckham-wouldn't touch this stuff.  Haha!  The clue was hidden in a ziplock baggie in the snake guts.

Sands of Egypt: container of oatmeal filled with gold coins.  They each had to dig for a gold chocolate coin.  The clue they found here had them stop for a drink break.  After they drank a bit of orange soda, we realized they'd been poisoned! They had to each hurry & grab a balloon to pop and find a paper telling them where the antidote was (blue squeeze-its in the fridge).  They were saved from the poison, phew!

Blow dart guns: After the balloon popping they had to shoot the natives with their blow dart guns (thanks to my parents for putting these together!). This was probably the highlight of the party for the kids-they loved this part!

Bug & snake pit: their final clues were found in the bug & snake pit (crawling under the pin pong table with creatures). They lined up with their clues 1-12 & found the treasure chest in the water heater closet!

The chest had a bag for each kid with gold chocolate coins, candies, snakes/spiders, & darts for their guns.  They took their guns, hats, & treasures home & were super excited.

After the treasure hunt, they ate dried beetle wings (potato chips), old bones (pretzels), & deadly snakes (licorice) + cake & ice cream cups.  The kids chatted animatedly & told me adventure stories & giggled lots.  Grayson opened some awesome gifts & we got pics of him with his friends & the parents started collecting kiddos. All in all it was a great success & Grayson said it was a GREAT day & the best party ever, so that made it worth it!

Cross fitter

Zac started crossfit September 17th.  His mom had been going for a couple weeks and invited him to try it.  They go to the Nyssa High School and there are several couples and a few other people who do it.  Sheila Hartley heads it up and figures out the WOD {workout of day}.  The first day he said he wanted to die.  He came in last, he was totally out of shape, etc.  But he loved it.  The Crossfit model is different from any workout routines he's done in the past and he started feverishly studying the science & proof behind it.  Now 4 months later, he is still loving it.  He goes 5 mornings a week {sometimes 6} at 6:00 am {wakes at 5:20} and is home by 7:15.  I think he's only missed 3 days total since starting and he did his own workout at home on those 3 days.  The boys love joining in and trying their pushups, handstands, squats, and pull ups.
I am SOOOO proud of him for sticking with it!  In 10 years of marriage, Zac has never been a morning person.  He loves and values his sleep and has always loved sleeping in.  Since starting Crossfit though, he has totally become a morning person!  He has more energy, looks amazing {his body has totally started leaning out & he's totally filing out his clothes}, and now we go to bed by 10:30 so he can be energized to wake up early.  Even on his off days he's up by 7 & feeling great.  He enjoys the camraderie between the others who workout there & is motivated by the way he feels & the changes he sees.

He's done a ton of awesome workouts {they are rarely the same}, but his favorites are the Hero workouts, named for different soldiers who have died at war.  Last Saturday {1.18.14}, he did one called Murph.  It's named after Michael Murphy {one of the guys remembered in the new movie, Lone Man Standing}.  It was tough!  They did the following workout {for time}:
-1 mile run
-100 Pullups {he did not use bands}
-200 Pushups
-300 Squats
-1 mile run

Wow!  His goal was to finish in an hour or less & he did it in 55:20.  Go Zac!  He LOVES it!
I am super impressed that he's stuck with it in spite of some stressful things and so proud of the way he's taking charge and making his health such a priority!  Go Zac!

Rescued {1.17.14}

This morning Lance brought his boys over for a bit.  While there he offered to watch Grayson & Beckham for me while I ran to Nampa.  Kels was visiting her folks & sister in Rigby, & Zac had a bunch of work for Cricket (here & Ontario), so it was just Lance & the boys. Such a sweet offer & one we couldn't pass up!

I dropped Fischer at grandma Wendy's (she's smitten with him-so adorable), and then dropped G & B at Lance's.  I took the shortcut road to their house that borders a field & is right next to a cement ditch.  After they were settled I headed out.  I do not take kid-free trips to town for granted, let me tell you.  I was able to chat with Candace on my very slow & FOGGY drive over, spend two of my Christmas gift cards at Ulta & Old Navy, and get groceries at Winco!  I swear there are few greater gifts a mom can get than uninterrupted time in town while her kids are being loved on by trusted family or friends.

I headed back home (still very foggy, colder & a bit wet on the roads), dropped off my groceries, picked up Fischer, and we headed to get the big boys.  I took the same side road shortcut & put the pickup in 4x4 like before, but right away I could feel a difference from a few hours earlier.  I was sliding all over the place & even using the instructions engrained in my brain by my husband & dad on what to do if you're sliding, I couldn't stop or get into the field on my right side.  I knew we were going into the ditch & it was the scariest feeling because I was so helpless to stop it.  I was praying out loud as we were sliding over & it felt like it was in slow motion-I thought we were going to roll completely over & be upside down.  I was trying not to panic with Fischer in the car, but fervently praying out loud.  We slid to a stop on my side & I grabbed my phone & called Lance, crying a little bit.  He said he'd be right there (they have a long driveway & I was hidden from his view + it was still extremely foggy).  I tried opening my door to see if I could squeeze out, but it would only open a couple inches before hitting the ditch.  I pulled it closed and talked animatedly to Fischer who was giggling in his sideways seat.  (Best baby!!). Lance got there in a hurry (like 3 minutes max) & he had all four boys in boots/coats/plugged in his pickup.  Uncle Dean came too which was so sweet.  I couldn't crawl out the passenger side easily because it was tipped sideways, so I gave Lance my boots & he grabbed my hand & helped pull me out.  I was so worried any movement would send the pickup rolling over with my baby in it!  Lance reassured me that wouldn't happen.  He helped me get my boots back on & carried me on his back to his pickup because it was super muddy. He got Fischer out & brought him to me, smiling & cooing like crazy-thank goodness, and then He drove me & the littles back to his house, so he could get a tractor.  He went back & with Dean's help, pulled the pickup out.  There wasn't a scratch on it!  I am so grateful it wasn't any more traumatic  than it was-it still shook me up quite a bit.  I'm thankful for a hundred little things like the fact that my cell was charged & had service, that lance answered my call, that I have a capable brother who could save me, and that Fischer is such a happy baby & too small to have any memory of the incident, that my big boys weren't with me, and that no one was hurt.

I gave Lance a big hug, told him I loved him & we headed home (we did not take the shortcut, nor will I ever again!). Seriously big shout out to my sweetheart brother who kindly watched my two big boys for four hours (they had a blast with their cousins & uncle) & then pulled me out of a ditch.  Love you, Lancey!
Even though it was a minor thing in the big scheme of things, and everything is fine, I keep reliving it in my head & also what could have been.  So scary!  I'm going to bed very thankful tonight.

Wally 2013 Edition

Wally was late getting to our house this year & didn't come til the 5th.  I'm pretty sure he didn't want to catch Grayson's fever.  Or something like that.

He came in with a bang & the boys were excited to see him and his hershey's kisses hello message.  They listened to the new letter he brought from Santa which helped them realize that Santa & Jesus are buddies and there is really no naughty/nice list.  This transition was going over so well until they started yelling at and pummeling each other with their fists...Hmm.

The letter said this:
Wally was VERY lazy this year.  He just wasn't his usual cheerful self.  The first few days he was on top of his game and then he started getting tired.  We'd find him in the same spot for several days in a row {he didn't work on Sunday's, he wasn't feeling well, he was up too late & couldn't think of a better spot}, so all in all, I think he was in about 5 different locations all month.  The boys weren't quite as interested this year {maybe because he just wasn't that exciting}, and didn't seem to mind him chilling in the same spot several times.  Several days throughout the month they didn't even look for him {which was awesome for him staying in that spot for a day or two longer}.  He even hung above the dining room table on the light & they ate several meals there before noticing.

When he left, he apologized to the boys for being kind of a party pooper.  They were totally forgiving & sweet, but I told them maybe Wally should take next year off.  Give the poor guy a break-he was obviously not up to the task this year.  (;  He did leave some pretty funny text messages telling them to look at the pictures on my phone & found this last bit of mischief.  They thought that was pretty hilarious!
This post resonated with me this year especially.  It was just about that bad around here, haha!  Thank goodness for reasonably unobservant, forgiving, & easygoing children!

December 2013 Miscellany {12.1-31.13}

This baby.  Oh how he makes our hearts happy!
Love a decorated house.  We moved furniture around and it's so cozy!  Our Christmas lights didn't all work on our tree
Beckham is always good for a laugh.  He is always wearing some sort of dress up attire-even when they're just regular clothes.  Seriously funny kid!
Zac and I were asked to be Mary & Joseph {with Fischer as baby Jesus} for the Ward Nativity Christmas party.  With Grayson still so sick, we were pretty hesitant up to the day about doing it.  Wendy volunteered to stay home with the two older boys so we could run sing & come home.  Thankful for her!  That made us feel much better.  We sang "What Child is This" and it went well.  Grateful for a husband who will do that kind of thing with me.  He is such a strength.  Fischer was laughing {hard & loud} in the foyer at the 16 year old girls and they were all swooning over him beforehand.  Then about 5 minutes before it was our turn, he fell asleep & stayed asleep the whole time.  Such a sweetie! I had to get a picture with Santa {uncle Burdette Pratt} too before we left & he sent home some candy filled candy canes for the boys.
Sometimes Fischer feeds himself.  He's advanced like that.
Not quite advanced enough to sit in the bumbo for too long before leaning a lot, though.
This baby.  Seriously cute!
We used a kit from Grami to make gingerbread Ninjas!  The boys liked it, but Grayson mostly liked eating the dough/frosting/cookies, & Beckham saved his to give to Grandpa Farrel, Grandma Marge, and Uncle Mark.  We went to visit them after the cookies were done & they all got a kick out of the boys.  Mark even wore Beckham's Batman mask!  He loves Beckham because he can tickle him & torture him and Beckham just keeps coming back for more.  He is a tough kid, for sure.
Got some cute shots of the littles together all ready for church.  Best presents ever.
Grami Tami & Grandpa Alan spent a week in Hawaii!  We missed them {although it was during our quarantine with Gray's sickness, so it's unlikely we would have really seen them anyway}, and all got together for lunch the Sunday they got home.  They brought us t-shirts {Grayson was ecstatic & immediately stripped to put it on & Beckham was horrified at the thought of clothing as a gift-ungrateful child!} (;  They also brought the boys shells & these funny light up glasses.  The boys ate ice cream in them & thought they were pretty cool!
The boys got much needed hair cuts from Talon.  Beckham bawled the entire time.  Why is this such an issue??  At least we don't have to do their hair on a daily basis!
Have I mentioned it's been freezing??!  Our windows aren't super great, so we often have frost & ice INSIDE, haha!
We fed the missionaries.  Elder Tupou {Tonga} and Elder Weston {UT}. Beckham was immediately enamored with Elder "Po."  He grew up with 5 brothers, so he knew just how to act.  They wrestled, chased, and even wore super hero capes!  They brought a great spirit to our home and it was SO good for our boys to be around them.  Bex was very sad when they had to leave and Elder Po said, "You're my boy, right?"  He nodded yes & gave him a fist bump.  Adorable!  These elders are going to make a great impact with their willing hearts and love for the Lord.  I hope our boys can follow in their footsteps.  One thing that impressed me was when Zac was talking to Elder Weston about the fact that he didn't serve a mission and it makes him nervous about how to teach our boys about the importance of it & how he sometimes feels inadequate about that.  Elder Weston said, "My dad didn't serve a mission either.  He always said "when" we served our missions, not "if," and we grew up knowing we'd go.  All three of his sons have served missions.  And, he is the most Christlike man I know-without serving a mission-I'm sure your boys will feel the same about you."  What a perfect sentiment for my sweet husband to hear!  And so so true.
 Grayson helps me tremendously with Fischer.
I had a massage envy membership for a while and had several massages built up that I'd paid for, but hadn't used yet.  I gifted 2 of them to Taylor & Kelsey and the three of us went over for massages.  So fun!  We had fun visiting, too.  We went to Target afterward and met our three guys.  Lance wasn't feeling great, so he and Kelsey went home early & we were bummed.   T&T and Zac and myself went to Red Robin to eat.  Taylor & I drove her car and when we were almost there, her lights turned off & we pulled in, parked, and the car quit.  Dead battery!  Crazy!  We ended up eating & then by total happenstance, an angel showed up next to us to help jump the car so we could leave it in the home depot parking lot.  The angel was Trent Holcomb & his wife!  Such a small world-so grateful!

Zac & Talon took the big boys to the Nyssa Nightlight parade while Taylor & I kept Fischer home and out of the cold.  It's a pretty lame parade if we're being honest {more of a chance for every siren in town to make sure it works}, but Grayson said, "That was the best parade I've ever been to!"  Definitely can't take him to any that are better or his expectations will be way up!  And, they did get some good candy this year instead of the hard choking candy that's usually there.
After the parade, the guys picked us up & we went next door to Tommy & Tara's house for a cookie exchange.  They were so brave & invited several other couples from our ward + kids!  The boys had fun playing & we had fun visiting, playing games, tasting & sharing cookies, and getting to know our neighbors better.

I snuck a quick pic before church started when I saw this adorable sight.  Grayson LOVES Fischer and is always sweet to help me out with him.  And, this is the first non-open mouth smile I've gotten voluntarily {or ever} in over a year...he's growing up!
Grayson often asks to watch Fischer at bedtime.  He talks to him, tells him stories, and makes him laugh.  Sometimes they both fall asleep.
Teacher gifts for both boys schools.
Beckham had his preschool Christmas party.  I was a bit nervous because they had drawn names to have a gift exchange.  Beckham's love language is gifts-in a BIG way.  Earlier in the week Grayson had brought home a gift for each member in our family that he'd picked out at school from Mr J's Junk store.  He had wrapped them & they were under the tree.  Beckham wanted his and Grayson said he could open it early.  Beckham kept asking if it was a super hero thing or a star wars thing and Grayson would say, "No, I couldn't find anything like that, but it's something we can play with together."  He was so excited to see Beckham's reaction & anxiously waited while Bex opened the gift.  It was two toy cars.  Beckham threw them down, started bawling, and went off about how he didn't want those cars & didn't like them.  HUGE fit!  I marched him to his room and explained that we don't act like that when we receive a gift and then went to give Grayson a big hug and thanked him for so thoughtfully thinking of his brother.  Thankfully Beckham's reaction didn't seem to bother Grayson-he was still pretty happy with himself for doing a good deed. (;  Later Beckham and I had a talk about his reaction and Grayson wandered by.  He said, "Beckham.  Christmas is about giving, NOT getting....but you get stuff too.  And, you get what you get & you don't throw a fit!  And, how would you feel if you gave someone something and they said they didn't like it?  Bad, right?  You should always say thank you when given a gift.  What if someone gives you clothes?  Say thank you.  What if someone gives you a book?  Say thank you!"  hahahaha!  I guess I'll have them teach each other from now on.  So his party was quickly approaching and I feared a repeat performance would be going on when he received his gift exchange gift.  We practiced saying thank you beforehand no matter what & got to the party.  They decorated Christmas "trees" and then sat in a circle for their gift exchange.  When Lyla opened the gift from him {random, huh?!} she loved it.  Then he opened the gift from Ryan and it was 3 different blow up super hero things {sword/shield, etc.}.  He got excited and said, "Thanks Ryan!"  Phew! (;
Beckham and I, along with Taylor & Chloe, Mom, Meg, and Barbara, had lunch with Tracy for her birthday.  She is such a beautiful gift in my life!  So thankful she was born and that I was raised-in part-by her.  She has showed such strength and grace through really tough trials this year and I appreciate her sweet and positive attitude and faith.  Beckham was quite the ham the entire time and said some funny things!  He warmed up to Barbara and snuggled up to her.  So funny!
Beckham got to go with me to Grayson's Christmas party at school.  They treated Bex just like a member of the class-Max especially is always so sweet to him.  Beckham always tells Grayson that Max is "both their best friend."  (:  They got so much junk food!  Haha!  It was a fun day & we are excited to get Grayson home for 16 days!
We got more snow than I can remember getting in a long time.  The boys were so excited!
We had dinner with the Peterson & Hartley families at Hartley's house this year.  It was yummy as always, and so fun to watch our kids play together.  Meg, Tad, & boys gave our family a set of Captain Underpants books and we've been reading 2-3 chapters a night.  The boys {and I} are LOVING this new routine.  I'm hoping it will just further a desire to have a love of reading like their mama!

Jillian-one of the boys very favorite & most seen babysitters-brought the boys a sweet Christmas gift.  We are all big fans of Jill and so thankful that she is willing to watch our boys almost weekly!
Sent Christmas cards out to our immediate family + our far away friends.
Zac had his annual birthday xbox party.  They used his moms new game room which worked perfectly and we appreciate his folks being so flexible while their house was invaded by guys gaming & eating.  He had a great turnout: Layne & Jeffery, Connor, Louis, Talon, Mason, Chris, Aaron, Darin, Chris, and a couple others.  Taylor spent the night here with me & the boys.  We watched Netflix and went to bed far earlier than our husbands.
The night following the xbox party, Taylor called us crying because Darin Thomas & Chris Alder {two of the boys at the party & Talon's cousins & bff's} were killed in a car accident.  They were both recently returned missionaries and had been BFF's their entire lives.  They were traveling home from the temple where they'd been for a college roommates wedding.  It was such a shock.  Zac knew them much better than me and we cried for T&T, the boys families, and all those touched by this tragedy.  It was such a surreal thing.  The next week leading up to their funeral, T&T shared some of the blessings and testimony building experiences they'd had with their family.  Talon has a huge extended family on both sides, but they are one of the closest families I've ever seen.  The cousins especially have awesome relationships.  Sunday morning I told the boys what had happened and that we needed to show T&T lots of extra love because their hearts were really hurting.  T&T were in sacrament meeting & the boys scooted onto the bench to sit by them.  Beckham went over, put his hand on Taylor's shoulder and said to Talon, "Uncle Talon, did your friends die wast night?"  Talon nodded and cried.  We all cried.  It's tough watching your siblings struggle and even though we know, believe, and have faith in God's plan, it's hard.  Zac attended the funeral of the boys with my parents-I desperately wanted to go, but had sick kids and thought I better stay home with them.  He said it was an incredible service.  They had pictures of the boys together from birth til death.  Pretty awesome.  We are so thankful to know that those boys are together with God and that we will see them again.

My parents took the big boys to see the movie Frozen with Doll & Mason and then met up with T&T for dinner at Winger's.  Such a sweet gesture & made the boys week.  They had a blast & Zac and I didn't know what to do with ourselves with just Fischer for the day!  haha!
