London Bike Hire Scheme

What a bike station should look like next year (designed by Minale Tattersfield)

What a bike station should look like next year (designed by Minale Tattersfield)

In the Spring of last year a bike hire scheme was introduced in Luxemburg (country where I am from).

Called “VeloH!” the scheme was a sucess from the beginning and I must admit a really practic, healthy and environment friendly way to go from a place to another around the city.
Especially great during Summer time.

Which is why I was more than pleased to see that a new Cycle Hire Scheme is due to be introduced in central London in May 2010, similar to the sucessful Vélib scheme in Paris and the as sucessfull but certainly less known VeloH in Luxemburg.

The scheme promise to offer an innovative addition to London’s transport network: good for London, good for Londoners and good for the environment.

Islington should be an obvious borough to benefit from the scheme, near enough to central London to tempt any cycler to get there in two wheels and therefor avoid the usually crowded underground or bus.

Key Facts:

  • 6,000 cycles
  • 400 cycle stations
  • 10,500 docking stations
  • An area of approximately 44km2

The Cycle Hire scheme will:

  • Be easy to use for short trips around Central London
  • Be available 24 hours a day, 365 days ayear
  • Alleviate congestion on the Tube and buses
  • Offer a sustainable and low emission form of transport
  • Provide a shift from car usage to cycling
  • Encourage local trips within central London

Think global, act local

You may not be aware that by recycling you can reduce your impact on climate change.

reuseGood news for the environment then as recycling has never been easier in Islington:
More than two thirds of Islington’s households now have recycling collected from their doorstep. Recycling from street properties is collected in a green box, from estates in a reusable bag and from some flats above shops in a clear sack.

By recycling you can: Save resources – many of the recycled material can be used again. In addition to this it reduces the need to use new natural resources such as trees and water.
Save energy – making new products out of recycled material saves energy and can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions which are adding to climate change.

This month the council has invested in 13 new high-tech sweeping machines, which boast the latest green technology, creating 65 full-time jobs in the process.
A whole army of street sweepers will be now cleaning our roads and pavements with more than 150 workers on weekdays and over 100 at weekends.

A journey through some of the largest Islington’s Parks

Determined to take advantage of the sunny weather, I’ve decided to take a glimpse on some of the largest Islington’s Park:
Highbury Fields, Caledonian and Barnard Park

The first one is the largest but also the oldest park in Islington, a very peacefull green space of 30 acres.
What surprised me is that it is hidden behind the very busy Higbury Corner, which is why a ot of people must be passing next to it every day without seeing it. The park has beautiful walks and an award winning playground.

The other two are much more smaller 18 acres for Caledonian and 9 acres for Barnard park.

However, both of them are very charming. The Caledonian Park was once the site of the old Cattle Market and still retains the original cast iron railings and working Clocktower. I also noticed that it’s very loved by squirrels, indeed after spending five minutes in the park, I had the chance to see six of them.

Finally Barnard Park, is situated in a residential area, has a very large open area a normal playground as well as an adventure one, which must be very fun for children living nearby.

To conclude I’ll say that the three parks are worth the look especially Highbury Fields, but I’ll advise to see them in summer time.

Welcome to Islington

Welcome to Islington

The London Borough of Islington was formed in 1965 from the amalgamation of the old Metropolitan Boroughs of Islington and Finsbury.
More than 180,000 people currently live there.

However, Islington has among the smallest amount of green space per person of all London boroughs.

The Islington council said: “We want the borough of Islington to thrive for generations. We want people to continue to enjoy their surroundings and appreciate where they live. This is why we are committed to improving our environment, now and for the future.”

This blog will be about what is being made to make Islington a greener place: Events, new plans but also what YOU can do to contribute.
