Why I Love The Pitch

This free weekly publication catering to the Kansas City metro has done it again! Subversive and demanding answers, the Pitch explores corruption within the government and spotlights local events. An earlier blog post showcased the Pitch’s sheer audacity in this corner of the Bible Belt, but astoundingly, they have pushed the envelope with the Vol. 29/No. 1 July 9-15, 2009 issue. How many pricks can you find?

Remnants of a Kansas City Ice Storm

The fresh sunrise is the size of a half dollar held close to the face. It ignites the ice-encrusted world and petals into cold flame the frail blooms of an early spring. The ice is death, but amid the veins of light that web skyward it suggets a life of its own. I am tired but it invigorates me and I wonder if I am glowing as well. In a contest between age and youth, the dogs play in the still morning, their breath visible. I imagine their barks are cacophanous. Perhaps they are just opening and closing their mouths in a silent parody of conversation. The crunch underfoot is delicious and I laugh as they pound their paws in the snow towards the hearth warmth of the house.

The Pitch

I’ve put this off since last summer, and since my copy is quickly turning yellow, I figured it was high time to scan this and get it over with.

The Pitch is a free weekly publication for the locals of Kansas City that deals with so many issues ranging from corrupt preachers to idiotic politicians to the year’s hottest metal bands. This particular cover boasts a fantastic piece of subversive subterfuge.

The grip and pommel make up a stylized phallus complete with splash of ejaculate, and the crossguard represents the vagina, clitoris, and the fallopian tubes. And they put it on the cover of a publication that is spread all around the KC metro area in front of stores, gas stations, libraries, and then some.
