RadGrid optimization webinar tomorrow, Register today

If you're like most developers using the RadControls for ASP.NET AJAX, you're probably using RadGrid, Telerik's flagship grid component for the standards-based web. RadGrid allows you to do some incredible things in web applications without requiring you to write much (or any, in some cases) code. At some point, we've probably all experienced how RadGrid can help you create a ASP.NET page with data display, paging, filtering, grouping, editing, and "pretty styling" in a matter of minutes. We marveled at its ease of use and its ability to make us look like "super" developers to our bosses and clients.

But as any application (and developer) matures, your focus shifts from "create features fast" to "make the website as fast as possible." Fortunately, RadGrid can evolve with you. While the "codeless" approach allows you to maximize productivity, there are tons of techniques that you can employ to maximize performance.
It's exactly that path towards performance optimization that we'll explore in tomorrow's Weekly Webinar. Join me at 11:00 AM Eastern, tomorrow, Thursday, October 1st for the first part of an in-depth look specifically covering RadGrid for ASP.NET AJAX optimization strategies. We'll set the stage for optimizing RadGrid and explore at least five optimization techniques that you can begin using in your projects today for improved performance. It'll be fast, but it'll be fun. See you in the morning!

Telerik Watch Minute: Enhancing RadGrid filtering

After the busy "news update" TWM last week, this week I decided to bring you an episode dedicated to cool Telerik coding tip. Specifically, in this episode I show you how you can easily use the client-side API of RadGrid for ASP.NET AJAX to enable complete keyboard control over all filtering operations. You can change filtering functions and filter the grid without ever touching the mouse! It's a simple tweak you can easily add to any RadGrid to give your "power users" the ability to be more productive. Enjoy! Download the code NOTE: You'll need the AdventureWorks DB to run the demo Click here to watch video full size (for better viewing of code)

Reminder: Free RadGrid webinar tomorrow

After a long, enjoyable holiday weekend (at least in the US), it's easy to forget items that have been on your calendar for weeks. So while you continue to "snooze" all of those important Outlook Reminders, here's your official reminder that the next RadWebinar is being held tomorrow, Tuesday, September 2nd at 9:30 AM PST (12:30 PM EST). And while this webinar is already quite full, we're leaving the registration open for all that are interested to attend.

As I mentioned in the original post, this webinar is unique for a few reasons (see the original post if you want to review) not the least of which is the advanced "301" session outline. Here's some of what Lino will cover tomorrow during this 2-hour webinar:

  • Grid calculations (Footer aggregates, group footers, calculated columns)
  • Client-side features (Data binding, CRUD operations, events, drag-and-drop)
  • LINQ (boosting RadGrid performance)
  • Grid templates (Global item template, nested templates, detail template)

Grab your developer buddies, an open conference room, and join us for a great training session on RadGrid. And if you absolutely can't make it live, we will be making an on-demand version of this webcast available later this week. See you tomorrow!

FREE RadWebinar on advanced RadGrid topics

So far, the RadWebinars by Falafel have been very successful training tools, but Telerik was concerned that too many people were not getting to benefit from the training because of the $99 price tag. We want everyone to benefit from the live, instructor-lead training on Telerik's tools. So, we're very excited and pleased to announce that RadWebinars are now a FREE resource! That's right. You can now get the same live, instructor-lead training from Falafel gratis. You're welcome. And as if that news weren't enough, the next RadWebinar, which is covering advanced topics for RadGrid, will be taught none other than the brilliant and always entertaining Lino Tadros (Founder & CEO of Falafel). In this new session, Lino will cover topics like grid calculations, client-side grid operations, and improving performance with LINQ. Consider this a 301 session for RadGrid. So let's recap:

  • New RadWebinar on RadGrid, September 2nd at 9:30 AM (PST)
  • MS MVP Lino Tadros teaching the session
  • Registration is FREE!
Can you ask for anything more? Register now because this one is going to fill-up fast.

Introducing: RadTips by Kevin Babcock

Telerik Watch Minute too short for your tastes? Then first, let me know, and then check-out our own Kevin Babcock's new video series called RadTips! In this series, Kevin will be creating 5 to 10 minute screencasts showing you how to accomplish specific tasks with the RadControls. The format is simple and condensed so that you see the essential steps required to use some of the cool RadControl features.

For his first episode, Kevin shows you exactly what you need to do to use the RadGrid's new client-side data binding functionality (something I introduced you to in a recent TWM). In about 5 minutes, Kevin takes you from a blank page to working solution that is bound completely client-side. Future episodes will build on this example and show you how to add paging, filtering, and sorting your client-side operations. You can catch the video on Kevin's Telerik blog now.

Hopefully you enjoy this new format. It's longer than a Telerik Watch Minute, it's shorter than a full-on Telerik Trainer episode, and hopefully just right for those looking for quick RadControl tips. Let us know what you think and enjoy the new video series!

NOTE: Apologies in advance for the video quality. Not Kevin's fault at all. We're quickly working on bringing a very robust video CDN online so that we can deliver high quality videos around the world at incredible speeds. Stay tuned!

Telerik Watch Minute: RadGrid client-side data binding

So it seems this new Telerik Watch Minute format is popular. Thanks to everyone who shared their feedback after "episode 1." Today I bring you the second "Minute", which incorporates some of your feedback (primarily addressing length- this is two whole minute vs. one) and focuses on new client-side data binding features in RadGrid for ASP.NET AJAX. The key thing I show-off in this clip is how much of a savings you get in terms of HTTP request and response size when you use web services and RadGrid client-side data binding vs. traditional ASP.NET AJAX operations. Since the ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel approach to Ajax executes the full page lifecycle on every request, all of your Ajax operations are littered with extra payload (like viewstate!). When you use web services instead (combined with the new Q2 2008 RadGrid features), your HTTP requests and responses are sweet, compact serialized JSON. Enjoy the second TWM and watch for many more to come. I'm still trying to figure out how often to publish these, but for now expect them at least weekly. What do you think? How often would you like to see TWM updates? P.S. You can grab the demo code used in this TWM from my follow-up ALT.NET talk post. The code is in a 7zip archive (sorry! FTP problems). I'll be posting a Zip version as soon as I can.

RadWebinar on RadGrid, July 29th

One of the most popular UI components Telerik makes is RadGrid for ASP.NET AJAX. Thousands of developers around the globe use this component every day to bring rich, standards-based grid functionality to their applications, and that creates a lot of interest in resources for learning how to maximize the Grid's power. And if all the documentation, on-demand videos, KB articles, Code Library examples, Telerik Trainer tutorials, and online demos aren't enough, we're giving you one more option. On July 29th, Falafel will host the first RadWebinar covering RadGrid!

Officially titled "Developing with Telerik RadGrid," this live training session will follow the format used for the first two Telerik Reporting RadWebinars. The session will start at 9:30 AM (PST) and last for a couple of hours with dedicated time at the end to answer your questions. The price is still a very affordable (for live training) $99 and the registration is open now. If you're interested in attending this training, I suggest you sign-up early since the popularity of RadGrid is likely to cause this session to fill-up fast. I hope you enjoy the new resource- stay tuned for more RadWebinars in the coming weeks.

RadGrid 5.0 beta coming soon

As the dog days of summer start to come to an end, it's time to start looking forward to the exciting new features coming in the Q2 2007 release. Four months have passed since the huge Q1 release and about three weeks remain before Q2 will hit the streets. Many controls will be getting new features in the next release, not the least of which is RadGrid.

RadGrid, which will get a major upgrade to version 5, is going to be sporting some very interesting new features. I almost hate to tell you the features here and ruin the surprise, but with a beta due late next week it's time to share. Aside from the normal round of bug fixes and performance improvements, RadGrid 5.0 will also feature:

  • Support for the ObjectContainerDataSource
  • Improved accessibility
  • Frozen column support in scrolling with static header scenarios
  • Built-in export to CSV
  • and Built-in export to PDF!
Clearly the last feature is the big one. You will now be able to export data from your RadGrid directly to PDF. This feature has been one of the top requests for a while now, and our developers are happy to finally deliver the powerful export option in the Grid.

The other features are no slouches, either. Frozen column support, export to CSV, improved accessibility, and client-side performance optimizations all contribute to making RadGrid 5.0 one of the (if not the) best ASP.NET grid components available. Certainly the best Telerik has ever released. Watch for an early beta of this new control late next week and get ready to give us your feedback as we put the finishing touches on another great Q release!
