Excited to see the launch of the IEA's latest report, "The Future of Electricity in the Middle East and North Africa"! A huge congratulations to the International Energy Agency (IEA) MENA team - Ali Saffar , Nadim Abillama , Brent Wanner , Yasmine Arsalane, Anthony Vautrin, and the entire crew -for their outstanding work in delivering this comprehensive analysis. It's a timely and insightful deep dive into the region's energy transition. As one of the peer reviewers and a participant in a preparatory workshop, I was honored to contribute alongside many talented experts. The report highlights critical trends: MENA's electricity demand has #tripled since 2000, making it the third-largest global contributor after China and India, and it's projected to grow another 50% by 2035—equivalent to adding Germany's and Spain's current demand combined. Key drivers include rapid population growth, urbanization, rising temperatures, and surging needs for #cooling (nearly half of peak demand) and #desalination (set to triple, shifting to efficient electric technologies). Today, gas and oil dominate 90% of the power mix, but the outlook sees natural gas meeting half the growth, solar PV capacity expanding tenfold to 200 GW, renewables rising to 25% of generation, and nuclear tripling to 19 GW. Enhancing efficiency, like upgrading air conditioners, could curb peak demand by 35 GW, while full delivery on national pledges could halve the sector's CO2 intensity—but it requires tripling investments in diverse, resilient systems. These findings resonate strongly with the TeraMed Initiative, which aims for 1 TW of renewable capacity across the Mediterranean by 2030 to boost energy security, affordability, and clean industrial growth. The report's emphasis on policy frameworks, falling solar costs, grid interconnections, and renewables' role in freeing up oil/gas exports aligns perfectly with TeraMED's push for accelerated deployment, fostering regional cooperation and sustainability. Global renewable capacity is set to double by 2030 amid rising headwinds from supply chains, grid integration & financing. Solar PV dominates with 80% of growth. Our forecast for its global capacity growth to 2030 is about 25% lower than in last year's report. Major solar PV & wind manufacturers continue to face financial struggles despite strong deployment globally. In China, PV prices are down over 60% since 2023 due to a supply glut & fierce competition for market share. And wind manufacturers outside China are reporting losses. Despite these challenges, companies' confidence in renewables remains strong – with investors & buyers benefitting from low solar prices. Most major developers have maintained or raised their 2030 deployment targets from last year, reflecting resilience & optimism in the sector. As renewables take on a greater role, policymakers must play close attention to vulnerabilities. Global supply chains for solar PV & for rare earths used in wind turbines are highly concentrated in China and are set to only diversify slightly by 2030 under current policy settings. The rise of variable renewables is also placing growing pressures on electricity systems. Curtailment & negative prices are becoming more frequent, causing economic inefficiencies & deterring investment. This underscores the need for investment in grids, storage & flexible generation.
