Soaring demand for lithium, copper, rare-earth elements and other critical minerals has opened a new front in geo-economic competition. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are leading the Gulf’s charge – converting sovereign capital into overseas stakes in mining operations and planned mining ventures across Africa and Latin America – while Oman and Qatar are building targeted portfolios at home and abroad.  Yet two-thirds of all Gulf projects remain at the ‘planned’ stage, highlighting how capital-raising, permitting and technology transfer could slow progress. The region’s strategic non-alignment and potential as an entrant in the critical-mineral sector is notable, however: the United States has inked mineral cooperation pacts and planned investments with the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman, while China has also sought joint exploration and planned mining ventures with the latter two countries.  Copper and lithium dominate on the list of targeted critical minerals. The UAE’s nuclear program is now cleaner than coal, faster than solar, and more transparent than most of the world. In its 2024 Safeguards Implementation Report, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reaffirmed the UAE’s classification as “Full Transparency” its most stringent and globally respected category. 🚨 $7 Trillion Gas Frontier 🇪🇬 QatarEnergy Boosts Egypt Stake with 27% in Shell’s North Cleopatra Block QatarEnergy has acquired a 27% stake in Shell’s North Cleopatra block expanding its footprint in Egypt’s Herodotus Basin, home to an estimated 7 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas potential. The move cements Doha’s role in shaping the next frontier of Mediterranean #LNG supply. - Shell remains operator (36%), joined by Chevron (27%) and Tharwa Petroleum Company (S.A.E.) (10%). - The North Cleopatra block spans 3,400 km² in Egypt’s Herodotus Basin, reaching water depths of up to 2,600 meters. - The block borders North El-Dabaa, where QatarEnergy already holds 23%, signaling a deepening regional strategy. 🔹 QatarEnergy’s CEO and Energy Minister Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said the acquisition expands Qatar’s exploration footprint and reinforces long-term collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum.
