In line with the vision of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum to prepare 1 million AI talents by 2027, the UAE is building on its momentum with continued specialized programs that strengthen national AI capabilities. Friend or Foe? Reflections on AI, Governance, Socieites & Culture from the Hili Forum Just wrapped up an incredible panel at the Hili Forum here in the beautiful Abu Dhabi on "AI and the Future of Governance, Societies and Culture". Organized The ECSSR and Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy AGDA The conversation wasn't just about what AI can do, but what we choose to do with it. Five key takeaways I shared: ✔️ Skills are expiring faster than ever. Once lasting five years, today’s skills may fade within two. What matters most is nurturing creativity, critical thinking & problem solving, and adaptability in the next generation. ✔️ Culture isn't just content, it's context: While AI struggles with the rhythm of our oral traditions and the nuanced stories that bind communities together, we have an opportunity. We can build local AI systems on top of our local frontier models Falcon, GAIS, and the more recent reasoning model K2-Think, that truly understand our cultural DNA, preserving not just what we say, but how and why we say it. Something for the Cultural departments in the UAE and the Arab world to think about. ✔️ Human connection remains irreplaceable: In education and work, efficiency and personalization isn't everything. It was inspiring to discuss Saudi Arabia's drive to position culture at the heart of its social and economic transformation with a key architect of the Kingdom's Cultural Talent Development Strategy, minister Noha Kattan, last week. Deputy Minister for National Partnerships and Talent Development at Saudi Arabia’s وزارة الثقافة Ministry of Culture, H.E. Noha Kattan joined me for a "fireside chat" at the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit at the KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology). #THEWAS The country’s investments in arts and culture have totalled $21.6 billion (£16.3 billion) since 2019, and minister Kattan outlined plans for a new arts university in Riyadh to help Saudi Arabia to achieve ambitious plans for a thriving creative arts economy by 2030. The creative arts is aiming to increase its share of Saudi’s GDP from under 1 per cent to 3 per cent by the end of the decade. Due to open in 2026, Riyadh University of Arts will be the Middle East’s first specialist arts institution and offer degrees and other courses in music, film, theatre and other performing arts. The university will expand to offer courses in architecture, culinary arts and heritage studies among other subjects and aims to graduate up to 30,000 students by 2040. “We are embedding arts and cultural education into schools and establishing collaborations with international universities but also creating labour market policies that recognise professionals in the arts and culture. Then we are providing the sectors and businesses that need to exist to take the talent we develop,” Kattan explained. “We are doing all of this in tandem – we can’t wait for generations for this ecosystem to develop,” said Kattan, speaking on the final day of THE’s summit on 9 October.
