Another exciting and inspiring week for the BNN team! Last week, our colleagues were on the move across Europe — connecting, sharing, and shaping the future of sustainable materials and safety innovation. Here are some highlights: 🌍 Utrecht, Netherlands: Beatriz Alfaro Serrano and Katharina Hogrefe joined the M12 Consortium Meeting of the PLANETS SSbD project, co-hosted by TNO. They took part in fruitful discussions driving forward this collaborative hashtag #EUproject in a beautiful city. 🌍 Vienna, Austria: Andreas Falk and Katharina Hogrefe participated in the 16th #NanoTrust Conference. Andreas presented the progress of BNN’s work related to Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (#SSbD) implementation in the NABIHEAL project, the efforts on strengthening the link between SSbD and Advanced Materials (#AdMa) (e.g., in the InnoMatSyn project), as well as some aspects of the methodological evaluation of the „step 5“ of the SSbD framework (version 2022) in the national funded projects #SESAM and #PHASE5. The event was organised by Institut für Technikfolgen-Abschätzung der ÖAW (#ITA) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences - Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW). Andreas also attended the SusChem-AT Meeting at Technische Universität Wien (#TUW), where the SusChem-AT-board met to prepare the next activities in Austria and internationally of the national sustainable chemistry communities — Stay tuned for the next event on 26 November 2025, spotlighting green chemistry start-ups in collaboration with hashtag #PlattformGrüneChemie (#PGC). 🌍 Maribor, Slovenia: Jenny Zeevi Dadov and Caitlin Ahern joined the M34 Consortium Meeting of the NABIHEAL project, recording interviews with partners collaborating to find more effective, safer, and more sustainable alternatives to current wound healing materials. On October 7th, participants had the unique opportunity to visit some of our respected co-hosts — leading research institutions and innovation centers in Linz.   The site visits offered inspiring insights into cutting-edge developments across multiple fields: 🔬Johannes Kepler Universität Linz – BIO³: Developing sustainable polymers for applications in medicine, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and beyond. ♻️ Competence Center CHASE GmbH: Advancing polymer waste recycling on an industrial scale. 🌱 Wood K plus - Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH: Exploring bio-based nanomaterials for bacterial cellulose functionalization, energy storage solutions, high-temperature processes, and carbon characterization. 💡 RECENDT GmbH - Research Center for Non-Destructive Testing: Showcasing the journey from lab to real-world application in process & nano analytics, quantum sensing, optical coherence tomography, and particle analysis. BNN Brings Safety and Sustainability of Materials to European Researchers’ Night  The Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (#SSbD) concept starts at the very earliest stages of the design process – so why not plant the seeds early with the researchers and consumers of the future? 😊  On 26 September 2025, BNN had a hands-on station at European Researchers’ Night, held as “Life is Science” at Universalmuseum Joanneum in the city center. Organized by BioNanoNet Association member acib GmbH, Life in Science was Austria’s only ERN event this year!  Children were asked to reach inside the blue box and describe the materials without looking, then write their descriptions on our board. After learning the basic concepts of SSbD – thinking of safety and sustainability over the entire life cycle of a material or product – those who were interested wrote down suggestions for improving safety and sustainability of materials to decorate our tree.
