𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐈𝐀’𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 | 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞’𝐬 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐨-𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 Europe’s bioeconomy is growing fast, but industries face a serious skills gap: 📊 Demand for green and bio-based expertise is rising almost twice as fast as supply. 📊 An EIB survey shows 69% of municipalities lack experts in environmental and climate assessment. Without urgent investment in #training, this shortage could slow down Europe’s green transition. At ESEIA - European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance, our members have identified three urgent needs: 𝟏. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 that treats the #bioeconomy as a system 𝟐. 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 between #education and #industry, with hands-on projects and mobility 𝟑. 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐭 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬such as systems thinking, #teamwork, #adaptability, and communication 💡 ESEIA - European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance has a strong track record of addressing these gaps through EU-funded projects: 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐱 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟓–𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗, 𝐇𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎): Linked academia, business, and the public sector through staff exchanges and joint innovation, bridging education with industrial uptake. 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 (𝐁𝐄𝐓, 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟓–𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗, 𝐇𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟎): 15 partners from 6 EU countries created two European Master’s programmes at TU Graz (AT) and University of Twente (NL), with Aalborg University (DK), FH Joanneum (AT), Aalto University (FI), and industry partners. 💬 As ESEIA Director Brigitte Hasewend puts it: “Europe’s bio-based future depends on how well we prepare our workforce today. Training must address not only technical expertise, but also the entrepreneurial and collaborative skills required to translate innovation into real impact.” 👉 By connecting HEIs, research organisations, industry, and policymakers, ESEIA - European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance is preparing a new generation of sustainability leaders to drive Europe’s transition to a climate-neutral and circular economy. 𝐄𝐒𝐄𝐈𝐀 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓: 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 #ESEIAISS25 has come to a close after an inspiring week at Innovationsstandort :metabolon in Lindlar, Germany. In its final days, the programme turned to #energy recovery and advanced #waste treatment, showing participants how circular principles can be implemented at both industrial and pilot-plant scale. Sessions ranged from exploring the opportunities and challenges of anaerobic digestion (#AD) with Himanshu H Cologne University of Applied Sciences, to a visit at #AVEA Leverkusen, one of the region’s major waste management facilities, and finally to understanding how landfill leachate is managed and treated. Together, these experiences offered a comprehensive perspective on the technical and environmental dimensions of circularity. The week concluded on a high note with student group presentations, where participants brought together insights gained throughout the programme — from laboratory work to industrial site visits — and translated them into concrete strategies for advancing circular economy solutions in industry. These final exchanges captured the essence of the Summer School: bridging research, practice, and innovation across disciplines and borders. ✨ A heartfelt thank you goes to all participants, lecturers, and organising partners — Cologne University of Applied Sciences, and Bergischer Abfallwirtschaftsverband — for their engagement, collaboration, and enthusiasm throughout the week. Together, we explored how industry can become truly circular — and built connections that will continue long after this Summer School. 👉 We look forward to welcoming you again next year at the ESEIA International Summer School 2026 #ESEIAISS26. #ESEIA #ESEIAISS25 #SummerSchool2025 #SustainableEnergy #Innovation #Collaboration #CircularEconomy
