🌍 Marking #WorldRefugeeDay and a decade since the so-called 2015 "refugee crisis," ICMPD Director General Michael Spindelegger reflected on Europe’s migration journey. 📢 The 2015 refugee crisis, 10 years on: How can the EU drive migration policies on job creation and labour mobility that benefit both migrants and host countries? 💡 Population growth is concentrated in the Global South, while many countries in the Global North, especially in Europe, face population decline and ageing. 💡 By 2050, nearly 90 countries in the Global North may face shrinking populations and labour market shortages in key sectors such as healthcare, STEM, construction, and transportation. 💡 Despite advances in automation, demographic pressures still require labour migration. #InFocus 🌍  As African youth become a vital force for progress, innovation, and sustainable development, the Rabat Process leads this strategic migration dialogue. 🤝 The Rabat Process thematic meeting on Youth, Education, and Innovation: Driving the Future of Migration gathered over 120 participants from 38 African and European partner countries. 🤝 Participants called for strengthened cooperation and investment in education, innovation, and in highlighting the voices of young people themselves.. 🤝 Nigeria and Spain co-chaired the event. 🌍 The Rabat Process, a regional migration dialogue, has offered since 2006 a framework for consultation among countries of origin, transit, and destination along migration routes linking Central, West, and Northern Africa with Europe. 💬 Monica Zanette, ICMPD Head of Region ICMPD Pan-Africa, highlighted the potential for partnerships. #ICMPDAroundTheGlobe 🤝 ICMPD Director General (DG) Michael Spindelegger and Deputy DG Sedef Dearing met with H.E. 📢 The 2015 refugee crisis, 10 years on: Did you know that EU asylum applications more than tripled since the 2000s? 💡 In the 2000s, EU Member States averaged 302,000 annual asylum applications, which more than tripled to nearly 950,000 in the 2020s. 💡 In 2015, this peaked at 1.283 million, starting what has now been labelled the "migration crisis."  💡 Globally, the number of forcibly displaced people has now reached a record 122.6 million, marking an 11.5% increase compared to the previous year.
