🌍 Marking #WorldRefugeeDay and a decade since the so-called 2015 "refugee crisis," ICMPD Director General Michael Spindelegger reflected on Europe’s migration journey. In this in-depth and introspective interview, Director General Spindelegger: 💬 Reflected on a decade marked by real progress towards refugee integration, yet strained by the continued inflow and growing political tensions. 💬 Outlined the “peaks” of migratory movements and refugee entry in Europe, before and after the “crisis”. 💬 Highlighted that since 2015, European migration policy has advanced significantly more than is often perceived in media or public discourse. 💬 Acknowledged the regional challenges, including debates on mechanisms for the return of migrants and refugees, and ‘externalisation’. 💬 Closed the interview with three key questions to guide the EU's discussions, especially on fair refugee systems, international support in reducing conflicts, and a global economic order that can reduce forced and irregular migration. 🔗 Read the interview at: https://lnkd.in/dgSph4PA #Migration #Refugee #MigrationPolicy ICMPD Pan-Africa ICMPD Mediterranean ICMPD Silk Routes ICMPD Türkiye Temsilciliği ICMPD Western Balkans ICMPD Policy & Research 📷 by Nadine Studeny

📢 The 2015 refugee crisis, 10 years on: How can the EU drive migration policies on job creation and labour mobility that benefit both migrants and host countries? 💡 Population growth is concentrated in the Global South, while many countries in the Global North, especially in Europe, face population decline and ageing. 💡 By 2050, nearly 90 countries in the Global North may face shrinking populations and labour market shortages in key sectors such as healthcare, STEM, construction, and transportation. 💡 Despite advances in automation, demographic pressures still require labour migration. The demographic-economic mismatch compels European governments toward more open immigration policies. 💬 In an interview reflecting on Europe's migration journey 10 years after the so-called “migration crisis,” ICMPD Director General Michael Spindelegger highlighted that: - Promoting labour migration remains a politically sensitive task, as it involves balancing economic needs with public concerns about irregular migration, integration, and national identity. - 2 priorities for job creation and labour mobility in Europe. 🔗 Read the interview at: https://lnkd.in/dgSph4PA #Migration #MigrationEurope #MigrationPolicy #MigrationData #LabourMigration #JobCreation #LabourMobility #WorldRefugeeDay

#QuotedIn 📰 The New York Times piece today covers a potential shift in Europe's migration management, featuring Martin Hofmann, Principal Advisor at ICMPD. 📰 "Migration picked up again, though less drastically, just after the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. But since then, the number of migrants arriving has fallen," highlighted Emma Bubola and Jeanna Smialek in the report. 💬 Hofmann Martin shared observations on a broad shift in Europe toward stricter migration policies. This trend, according to Hofmann, has emerged from general frustration over economic pressures and a perceived lack of opportunities. 💬 Hofmann suggests that even as migrant arrivals decline, policies that appear to be effective in stemming immigration are likely to retain their appeal and continue to gain momentum. 🔗 Read the article at: https://lnkd.in/dgNaPUHc 📍 Please note that a subscription is required to read the article. #Migration #Europe #MigrationPolicies #MigrationManagement #InTheNews

📢 The 2015 refugee crisis, 10 years on: Did you know that EU asylum applications more than tripled since the 2000s? 💡 In the 2000s, EU Member States averaged 302,000 annual asylum applications, which more than tripled to nearly 950,000 in the 2020s. 💡 In 2015, this peaked at 1.283 million, starting what has now been labelled the "migration crisis." 💡 Globally, the number of forcibly displaced people has now reached a record 122.6 million, marking an 11.5% increase compared to the previous year. In an in-depth interview on Europe's situation 10 years after the so-called “migration crisis,” ICMPD Director General Michael Spindelegger highlighted the multiple “peaks” of migratory movements and refugee entries in Europe, long before the “crisis” began: 💬 "The EU asylum applications have tripled since the 2000s, with 4.1 million approved applications since 2014 - reflecting Europe's commitment to international protection." 🔗 Read the interview at: https://lnkd.in/dgSph4PA #Migration #Refugee #MigrationPolicy #MigrationData #WorldRefugeeDay #AsylumApplications #Displacement

Today is #WorldRefugeeDay 🌍 This year marks a decade after the 2015 ‘refugee crisis’, which drastically changed international migration, particularly in Europe. 🌍 As global crises escalate, more people are forced to flee their countries. 📌 Cross-sectoral decision-making is essential for sustainable policy solutions involving international, national and local institutions, development organisations, diaspora communities, and the private sector, among others. 📌 Cooperation is key for refugee integration and social cohesion, ensuring refugees have access to resources for participation in their countries of asylum, with equal rights, opportunities, and responsibilities. 📌 It’s important to recognise the potential of refugees’ contributions to local economies and facilitate their labour market integration. 🌍 Ten years since the refugee crisis of 2015 – what has changed, and which challenges remain? 💬 ICMPD Director-General Michael Spindelegger gave an introspective interview on Europe's situation 10 years after the so-called “migration crisis” — highlighting the real progress towards refugee integration, yet strained by the continued inflow and growing political tensions. 🔗 Read the interview with ICMPD Director General at: https://lnkd.in/dgSph4PA #Migration #Refugee #MigrationPolicy ICMPD Pan-Africa ICMPD Mediterranean ICMPD Silk Routes ICMPD Türkiye Temsilciliği ICMPD Western Balkans ICMPD Policy & Research
