Cybersecurity: A leadership responsibility and a matter of trust 🤝    The number of successful cyberattacks on companies in Germany has risen significantly. According to a recent study conducted by TÜV-Verband, one in six companies was affected in the past year alone – and the trend is rising.    ⚠️ Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are particularly at risk. Many believe they are well prepared – 91% rate their cybersecurity maturity as high. However, over half are unaware of the EU’s new NIS-2 Directive, which imposes much stricter security requirements. This gap is alarming. Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT issue – it is a core leadership responsibility.    As a leader in TIC I see a clear need for greater awareness, education, and leadership accountability when it comes to digital security. That’s why I recently shared my views in an interview with the regional daily newspaper Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger  – because I strongly believe that cybersecurity must be anchored at the very top of an organization.    At TÜV Rheinland Group, we take a twofold approach:  🔐 Protecting our own infrastructure: Every day, we register thousands of attempted attacks. Our Security Operations Center in Cologne operates 24/7, 365 days a year to proactively detect and prevent breaches.    🌍 Cybersecurity as a global service: We support companies around the world – through penetration testing, compliance consulting, and security certification. Over 250 experts work in Germany, the U.S., Japan, Korea, China, and beyond.    Our experience shows:   ➡️ Attack methods are evolving – classic spam has been replaced by personalized phishing, often powered by AI. Deepfake technology and generative AI are already being used to manipulate communications and mimic identities – making attacks more targeted, more believable, and more dangerous.   ➡️ Only a minority of companies use AI defensively – a missed opportunity. In the recent Ministerrat (Council of Ministers), the Austrian Federal Government announced the creation of a fund-of-funds (Dachfonds) to mobilize private and institutional capital for startups and scaleups. The next chapter of Made in Germany begins with #DeepTech. Yesterday in Berlin, we presented our new #BCG study together with the BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V. on how Germany can secure a leading position in future technologies and boost its competitiveness. The message is clear: the future doesn’t wait. It starts now. Our study shows the immense scale of the opportunity: By 2030, Deep Tech could create €8 trillion in value worldwide. Yet less than 10% of global Deep Tech unicorns are European today, and around half of late-stage funding comes from outside the EU. We need to take huge steps in order to keep up with the US and China in this highly competitive race. Class 1 of “AI Catalyst” at DHBW Lörrach / Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University (DHBW) = done. 🚀 What a crew. We went from “AI feels abstract” to “I know the next pilot to run on Monday.” My 5 biggest takeaways from the room: Keep it at “Newton level.” We don’t need rocket science to create value — start simple, stay practical. LLMs aren’t magic — they predict the next word. The heavy lift is compute; the edge is how we use it. Context > model. Set your vector database and instructions right from the start, or you’ll chase errors later. Experts build the AI-core. Use AI for “Level-2” tasks, but capture the know-how of your real experts to make it fly. Agents = weekly leverage. Automate scouting/reporting on a cadence (real estate, price lists, inventory…) and let humans decide. Why this matters: the fastest wins came when we combined people who know the business with small, governed AI sprints — even onboarding gets easier when expert knowledge is available 24/7 through an internal AI-core.
