Every minute, every hour, every day we’re working towards a cancer free future.
About us
As Australia's peak national non-government cancer control organisation, we are leading the change needed to reduce the impact of cancer now and in the future. Cancer Council leads national action to improve cancer control and care for people with cancer and their caregivers. Cancer Council Australia advises the Australian Government and other bodies on practices and policies to help prevent, detect and treat cancer. We also advocate for the rights of cancer patients for best treatment and supportive care. Our independence means we can direct our funding where it is most needed and influence the public agenda to improve outcomes for people with all types of cancer, and across all stages of the cancer journey. We work with our members (the eight state and territory Cancer Councils) to prevent and control cancer, and provide support for people affected by cancer. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death in Australia, and each year it takes the lives of too many. However, early detection and awareness can make a difference. 🔍 Know the signs: Persistent cough, unexplained shortness of breath, and chest pain are just a few of the early symptoms. If any of these sound familiar, speak to your GP—early intervention is crucial. For eligible Aussies, the National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) is a free initiative from the Australian government designed to detect lung cancer before symptoms appear. Learn more about it here https://brnw.ch/21wX8T2 Queenslanders aged 50 – 80 years old who smoke but are looking to quit can join the Max Up Research Study (free smoking cessation and free lung cancer screening) – call Quitline (13 78 48) or visit this link https://brnw.ch/21wX8T3 #LungCancerAwarenessMonth #EarlyDetection #CancerSupport #LungCancerScreening

Cancer Council Australia is proud to announce the launch of our new National Policy on Mental Health and Cancer Care, which aims to address inequities in access to mental health support and services experienced by people diagnosed with cancer. We recognise that more work needs to be done to understand the experience of psychological distress and mental health among people affected by cancer in Australia. This policy outlines our vision for the future and the needed advocacy to address health inequities in this population. The following priorities are aimed at improving the identification and management of psychosocial distress and access to mental health support for people diagnosed with cancer: - Improving the integration of routine screening for psychological distress among people affected by cancer - Embedding a stepped-care approach to mental health support in cancer care - Mapping the capacity and resourcing needs of the mental health workforce to support people affected by cancer - Improving data collection and reporting of the mental health of people across the cancer continuum For people diagnosed with cancer to access appropriate psychosocial and psychological support, collaboration is required across all levels of government, social services, health and mental health services, and non-government organisations and service providers. We also acknowledge the important contributions of experts from across the cancer care and mental health sectors who helped shape this work, including lived experience advocates who contributed to its development. This important research done by All.Can Australia will identify key gaps in current care to improve care models. The anonymous survey will collect data from the experiences of patients and carers in Australia who have been directly impacted by cancer, and will take only 20 minutes. For more information about the survey and how to sign up, see below ⬇️
All.Can Australia Co-Chair’s Christobel Saunders and Bill Petch recently shared their insights on the latest All.Can Australia and Medicines Australia’s special interest group #OncologyIndustryTaskforce patient survey. They discussed what this will mean for cancer care in Australia and how we plan on using the insights gathered. According to Christobel, “A comprehensive understanding of the evolving needs and experiences of Australians affected by cancer is essential to informing better support, care, and policy. Their insights are fundamental to shaping the future of cancer care." Bill added that "by leveraging these insights, we can drive meaningful improvements in cancer care across Australia—enhancing diagnosis, treatment pathways, and long-term outcomes. This research will inform future strategies to ensure people receive the best possible care and support at every stage of their journey." The survey is now open. Share the survey with your network or complete it here: https://lnkd.in/gDe2r9Eu
