On November 9th, students and researchers from Children's Cancer Institute are taking part in the 'Step Out for Cancer' event, proudly run by Tour de Cure Australia — an incredible organisation that supports and funds vital cancer research across Australia, including here at the Institute. Every step we take helps raise awareness and funds to advance life-saving research for children battling cancer. Our students are walking to honour the kids and families who inspire everything we do — and to help bring us closer to a world where every child can live a long and healthy life. If you’d like to support our students and the work happening at Children’s Cancer Institute, please consider donating here: https://lnkd.in/g8wC9bNq Your support fuels discovery, innovation, and hope. Together with Tour de Cure, we’re stepping out to change lives — one step, one child, one breakthrough at a time 💚 #ALifeShouldBeLong #CuringChildhoodCancer #ItsNotIfItsWhen #StepOutForCancer #TourDeCure #CancerResearch #MedicalResearch

We are curing childhood cancer. It’s not if. It’s when.
About us
At Children’s Cancer Institute, we believe that a life should be long. That every child should have the chance to grow up and grow old. To plan exciting futures, chase their dreams, and fulfil their potential. But cancer cuts life short for hundreds of children every year, before they’ve even had a chance to make their mark. Here in Australia, more than 1000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer every single year. And every week, 3 young lives will be lost to the disease. For those who survive, up to 70% will experience serious long-term health problems caused by the very treatment that saved their life. As the only independent medical research institute in Australia wholly dedicated to childhood cancer, our role is vital. Sixty years ago, cancer was nearly always a death sentence for a child. Today, thanks to medical research, more than 8 out of 10 children survive. But we won’t stop until every child can live a long, happy and healthy life. Our task won’t be easy – childhood cancer is hugely complex – but we’re confident that with the brightest brains, the latest in cutting-edge technology and worldwide collaboration, we can and we will cure every child of cancer. It’s not if, it’s when. To view all of our current career opportunities, please visit: https://ccia.org.au/home/join-us/work-us/

Professor David Ziegler has been announced as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS). The prestigious award recognises the nation’s most outstanding minds in health and medical research, innovation, and leadership. Leader of the Brain Tumours Group at Children's Cancer Institute and Chair of Clinical Trials for the Zero Childhood Cancer Program (ZERO), Professor Ziegler was recognised for his leadership and expertise in transforming outcomes for children with some of the most high-risk cancers. He also he heads up both the Neuro-Oncology Program and Clinical Trials Unit at the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. “I am incredibly grateful both for this honour and to be able to work with such fantastic friends and collaborators at the Kids Cancer Centre at Sydney Children’s Hospital and at Children’s Cancer Institute who all are united in our goal to improve outcomes for children with cancer. “Together we have made incredible progress and this only inspires me to keep fighting the battle on behalf of all our patients.” Professor Ziegler’s research at the Institute is focused on developing targeted therapies for brain cancers, particularly DMG (diffuse midline glioma), the most aggressive and incurable of all childhood cancers. In 2013, he established Australia’s first research program for DMG, collecting and growing tumour samples from children around Australia and screening drugs against these to identify potential new therapies. His team is looking to find which combinations of these drugs work best, with this research leading to a number of clinical trials. As the clinical lead of trials run through the Zero Childhood Cancer Program, he has been pivotal in the establishment and growth of ZERO, Australia’s first and only precision medicine program for children with cancer. Election to the Academy is one of the highest honours in Australian health and medical sciences. Fellows are elected by their peers for their exceptional contributions to the advancement of knowledge, the translation of research into improved health outcomes, and their commitment to mentoring the next generation of researchers and clinicians. Congratulations David Ziegler on this momentous achievement! #ALifeShouldBeLong #CuringChildhoodCancer #ItsNotIfItsWhen

We're incredibly proud to share that Dr Aaminah Khan of Children's Cancer Institute has been recognised as a 2025 AAMRI Rising Star Award Finalist for her research into aggressive childhood brain cancers, particularly diffuse midline gliomas. Watch this fantastic video to hear how Aaminah is making a tangible difference in the fight against this deadly disease. #2025AAMRIConvention #ALifeShouldBeLong #CuringChildhoodCancer #ItsNotIfItsWhen Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI)
2025 AAMRI RISING STAR AWARD FINALIST | Introducing Dr Aaminah Khan of Children's Cancer Institute. Aaminah’s research aims to find better treatments for aggressive childhood brain cancers, particularly a deadly tumour called diffuse midline glioma. She discovered that these tumours rely heavily on a specific metabolic pathway - and blocking it with a combination of two existing drugs completely stopped tumour growth in lab models. This led to children being included in an international clinical trial, with the approach now being expanded to other high-risk brain tumours. Thank you to MinterEllison for supporting the 2025 AAMRI Rising Star Award Finalists. The winner of the 2025 AAMRI Rising Star Award, proudly sponsored by CSL, will be announced at the 2025 AAMRI Dinner on Tuesday 4 November. #2025AAMRIConvention

Children's Cancer Institute welcomes the Commonwealth’s Draft National Health and Medical Research Strategy and its bold vision for a stronger, more connected research ecosystem. The draft rightly highlights workforce, funding, data and infrastructure as key enablers, underpinned by ambitions to drive national prosperity and security, lead the world in health outcomes, deliver equity so no one is left behind, secure a resilient and sustainable health system, and strengthen regional and global partnerships. But to truly deliver on its promise, the Strategy must address the structural barriers holding Australian research back, from unfunded indirect costs, and insecure career pathways to fragmented funding, and persistent inequities in rare diseases. Without stronger measures and clear commitments, Australia risks missing a once-in-a-generation opportunity to unlock the full health, economic and social benefits of medical research and accelerate progress towards curing childhood cancer. You can read our full submission in response to the draft Strategy below.
