Koala Conservation Australia Limited & The Koala Hospital have been helping rescue and rehabilitate koalas since 1973.
About us
Koala Conservation Australia (Port Macquarie Koala Hospital and Wild Koala Breeding Program and Visitor Centre) has been helping rescue and rehabilitate koalas since 1973. We are a not-for-profit organisation that includes approximately 200 volunteers dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating koalas and conserving and restoring their natural habitats. In 2022, the Koala was officially listed as an endangered species. Unfortunately, this listing was completely preventable. Recent studies indicate the koala will become extinct in New South Wales before 2050 – unless rapid and effective action is taken. Our Koala population face several threats including loss of habitat, disease, and injury and attack. The world-first Wild Koala Breeding Program was launched in 2024, at Guulabaa - Place of Koala with the aim to arrest declining koala populations and ensure the survival of the species for generations to come.

Did you know.... 🌿 Koalas are fairly fussy about their food! Even though there are over 900 species of eucalypt, koalas will generally only eat around 50! And of those 50, they may only be happy to eat 2 or 3 varieties that are native to their home range! 🌿💚 Sometimes that can make care complicated if the koala is from outside our immediate region and their fave fodder is not grown nearby! So what do we do? We work with incredible, dedicated conservationists and volunteers to ensure that all koalas - no matter where they are from, or how fussy they are - get what they need. We currently have two koalas in our rehabilitation yards from the Uralla region who are benefiting from the extra effort of getting food to them. Big shout out and thank you to Tanya at @wireswildliferescue Inverell who is has someone collecting leaf for us around Uralla, which is then driven to Dorigo by Jess, and collected by our volunteer koala carer De to be brought back to Port Macquarie. 💚 And so you know.... these lucky Uralla koalas enjoy a diet of yellow box, grey box and nicholli 🌿🌿🌿 Together... we are working to save koalas. And we're so grateful for the whole community that pull together for the cause. #koalarescue #savekoalas #portmacquariekoalahospital #wildkoalabreedingprogram #portmacquarie

Happy Friday! 🐨🌿 A gentle reminder that if you're moving around our region, and any koala region, that koalas are on the move and looking for love 💚 We've already seen far too many koalas in the last few months that have been the victims of car strikes, and sadly many that did not survive. From August to April, on the Mid-North Coast, is the most dangerous time for koalas as they move around to find a mate. Please be koala aware. And remember that our 24:7 rescue teams are on call to help any sick or injured koalas. ☎️6584 1522 - even if you're unsure give us a call and we can send a team member out to check. We can all work together to help save koalas 🐨💚 https://lnkd.in/g5bMx5NS #KoalaConservationAustralia #SaveKoalas #PortMacquarieKoalaHospital #WildKoalaBreedingProgram

Thank you COALAXY - Nigel is an absolute favourite of our team and visitors alike 🐨💚
🐨 Celebrating our next Koala adoption: Delungra Nigel At COALAXY, we strongly believe that every step toward protecting the precious biodiversity that sustains life on our planet is a step toward a sustainable future. 🌿 Our latest adoption supports Delungra Nigel, a remarkable young koala cared for at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. Found entangled in a fence as a tiny joey, Nigel suffered severe nerve damage that required the amputation of one limb. Thanks to the incredible dedication of the hospital’s volunteer care team, Nigel has not only recovered but has become a beloved resident at the Koala Conservation Wild Breeding Facility and Visitor Centre at Guulabaa – Place of Koala. Despite his disability, his resilience and spirit continue to inspire everyone who meets him. 🙏🏼 A heartfelt thank you to Koala Conservation Australia and the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital for their tireless work protecting these endangered animals — and to our clients, whose partnership in advancing biodiversity strategies, sustainable business models, and circular product design makes adoptions like this possible. Together, we’re proving that business can be a force for regeneration and environmental impact. #EndangeredKoala #BiodiversityStrategy #ImpactBusinessDesign #CircularDesign

What an incredible day 🐨💚
🇦🇺 This week, our CEO Tim Cadogan is in Australia to celebrate a decade of Australian generosity — and to see firsthand the incredible impact of community giving. During his visit to Koala Conservation Australia in Port Macquarie, Tim joined the morning news program to share how 160,000 donors from 140 countries came together through GoFundMe to raise $8 million AUD in the wake of the 2019/2020 bushfires. That generosity has now helped bring new life into the world — including the first joey born through the program, named Hope by donors. 🐨💚 Since launching in Australia ten years ago, Aussies have donated more than $1.1 billion to local causes — proving that when communities unite, extraordinary things happen. 🎥 : 7NEWS Australia

HOPE 🐨💚 On Tuesday 14 October we had the most incredible day as we welcomed the Global CEO of GoFundMe, Tim Cadogan, and his team to the Wild Koala Breeding Centre to celebrate 10 years of GoFundMe in Australia. During the devastating 2019-2020 Black Summer Bushfires, more than 160,000 people across 140 countries donated to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital via a GoFundMe campaign 💚 The result? The largest campaign ever in Australian GoFundMe in history, and the funds to launch the Wild Koala Breeding Program and Centre 🐨 To honour the support both, then and now, the GoFundMe team were given the opportunity to name our first Joey born in our breeding program - a privilege they handed on to the 160k+ donors, across 140 countries, who supported us so generously at the time, and since. Were excited to announce our first Joey from our breeding program is now named - Hope 💚 We will have more shortly on yesterday’s celebrations. In the meantime, over the coming weeks look out for your opportunity to help us name a Joey 🐨 Thank you @gofundme and thank you to all of our incredible supporters and donors. Every single one of you contributes to our mission to save koalas 🐨 #gofundme #hope #guulabaahope #savekoalas #wildkoalabreedingprogram #portmacquariekoalahospital

Spring and summer bring new life across the Mid North Coast – and that includes the return of some less-welcome visitors to our eucalyptus plantations. With warmer weather, insect populations surge, and our plantation teams focus again on insect inspections and treatments. As it warms up, the young crawler stage of these pests emerges, which is the most vulnerable stage to control measures, so it’s the best time of year to manage pests that threaten our vital koala food trees. These plantations play a critical role in supporting the koalas in our care. They provide a reliable, chemical-free food source for the koalas in our care, and are an essential part of our Wild Koala Breeding Program. Every leaf matters. Protecting the health of these trees is vital to the survival of the koalas who rely on them. Read more > https://lnkd.in/gQEkYDM9

A heartfelt thank you to all the talented young artists who entered our Drawn to the Wild Art Competition. We were absolutely blown away by the creativity, care, and love for koalas that shone through in every single entry. Each artwork captured something unique - from bold, imaginative colours to heartfelt messages about protecting the wild places koalas call home. This community art initiative was designed to inspire children to explore their connection with nature through creativity, and the results were simply outstanding.
