Today in Wellington, we explored how AI and innovation are reshaping New Zealand’s public sector at ServiceNow's first NZ Government Summit - and the conversations couldn’t have been more inspiring. Peter McDonnell, our Chief Transformation Officer, opened on the topic of AI Trust & Governance, and the delicate balance between speed and safety. Trust “is earned in drops and lost in buckets” - as government agencies adopt AI, leaders, users, builders, and citizens all need confidence that the technology is transparent, fair, and used responsibly. Dr Mahsa McCauley (Mohaghegh), Associate Professor Auckland University of Technology and Founder of She Sharp, shaped a captivating perspective on AI in Action - reminding us how quickly technology moves: what she built for her PhD is already obsolete. Loved her advice on adopting a “spongy mindset” - soak up what’s new, squeeze out the noise, and bounce back stronger. She showed us how AI can empower every student with a digital tutor, every teacher with an assistant, and even how bees can become “patients” in AI-driven research. It was then my privilege to host what may have been the most fascinating and eye-opening panel yet on navigating change in the Public Sector, with Richard Kay (DOC), Campbell Mackie (ACC), and Richard Lee (MBIE). The themes were clear: 🤝 Connected citizen experiences: “You shouldn’t have to think ACC for this or DOC for that - it should just be about the outcome you need.” 🌲 Technology freeing people for purpose: Rangers at DOC aren’t in conservation to fill out forms. AI and IoT are being used to keep them in nature - whether it’s drones detecting endangered nests, or AI backpacks monitoring kākāpō. ⏩ Fail fast, learn fast: Public sector agencies are embracing agility, shifting from perfection at first release to experimentation at speed. 🏛️ Collaboration is key: “Why do we have 20 agencies doing the same thing 20 different ways?” A call to build shared capabilities and talent pools resonated strongly. 🤖 AI with clarity: ACC alone is testing 40–50 AI use cases, from back-office to frontline, with board-level support - but with a strong focus on problem-first, not tech-first. And of course, no innovation panel is complete without… a conservation love story involving helmets! Just when you think AI refers to "Artificial Intelligence", it may mean "Avian Intimacy” 🪖 💚 🐦 The big takeaway for me is that innovation isn’t about shiny tools. It’s about freeing people to do meaningful work, collaborating across agencies, and shaping citizen experiences that reflect our values. I shall now go back to my Magpie-deterrent helmet wearing home...
