“Cross-border collaboration is the cornerstone of Europe’s offshore future, and the Offshore TSOs Cooperation Paper exemplifies this vision in the North Sea. This paper represents a voluntary first step by the Offshore TSOs Collaboration (OTC), hydrogen TSOs, wind energy developers, and commercial offshore infrastructure partners towards a more coordinated regional approach. It reinforces our commitment to pragmatic cooperation and sets the course for transforming the Northern Seas into Europe’s green power hub.” Bernard Gustin, Elia Group CEO Unlocking the enormous offshore wind potential of the Northern Seas takes collaboration. In the Offshore TSOs Collaboration (OTC), which brings together twelve European electricity transmission system operators, we developed a Cooperation Paper with our partners WindEurope and @HyNOS, a collaboration of seven Northern Seas Hydrogen TSOs. This paper sets out a practical, interface-oriented approach to regional infrastructure planning in the Northern Seas. It aligns planning and build-out of: • electricity grids; • offshore wind development together with WindEurope; • hydrogen networks together with HyNOS. The aim is to accelerate Europe’s energy transition and strengthen the resilience of our energy system. Giles Dickson, CEO WindEurope: “This is a really welcome collaboration between the TSOs and offshore wind farm developers on the planning of the offshore electricity grid. Those generating energy offshore and those bringing it ashore must work closely together from an early stage, whether it is for radial connections or cross-border projects.” Christoph von dem Bussche, CEO GASCADE Gastransport GmbH and representing HyNOS: “Offshore hydrogen production – integrated in the offshore electricity grid – can be a key enabler for the successful build-out of offshore wind energy. Therefore, a close collaboration around the Northern Seas between Electricity TSOs, Hydrogen TSOs and wind park developers is essential to create synergies in the build-out of the future energy infrastructure system.” Pascal De Buck Willemien Terpstra This Cooperation Paper marks a strong step towards an affordable, secure, and integrated offshore energy grid for Europe. Together we are shaping the future of energy. 🔗 Read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/eqgZU7Ue 50Hertz Transmission GmbH Amprion GmbH Creos Luxembourg EirGrid Group Energinet NESO National Grid Réseau de Transport d'Électricité Statnett SF TenneT TenneT Netherlands TenneT Germany Fluxys Gas Networks Ireland Gasunie Gasunie Deutschland National Gas NaTran 📷 Jeroen Vranckaert #OffshoreWind #Hydrogen #EnergyTransition #NorthSea #GridInfrastructure #TSO #Interconnectors #TYNDP #Collaboration #NSEC

Results of 2025 CRM Auctions Security of supply is guaranteed for the winter of 2026-2027, and important steps already taken for the following winters. For the first time, Elia successfully conducted three Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auctions in parallel this year. 📊 Y-1 auction for the delivery period winter 2026-2027 Y-2 auction for the delivery period winter 2027-2028 Y-4 auction for the delivery period winter 2029-2030 These coordinated auctions have resulted in full assurance of security of supply for the winter of 2026-2027, while also laying a solid foundation for subsequent delivery years. 📆 The auctions demonstrated a robust and competitive market environment, characterised by ample liquidity and efficient price formation. Key outcomes include: ✅6,2 GW contracted for 2026-2027 (over both auctions), with costs significantly reduced compared to the previous year (20.2 k€/MW vs 25.7 k€/MW); ✅650 MW (nominal) of BESS have obtained a CRM contract. In total more than 2 GW of BESS have been (partially) contracted in the CRM over the past auctions; ✅Prices well below the Intermediate Price Cap (IPC), reducing the cost of the CRM. The Belgian CRM approach continues to be recognised as a European best practice. With these results, we are making significant progress towards a reliable, sustainable, and affordable energy system. Congratulations to all the teams involved! 👏 🔗 Read the full press release for more details https://lnkd.in/ePHQ8JVU Sébastien Rousseaux, Cassandre Tasiaux, Adrien Charles, Tim Wilms, Gilles Etienne

  • Weighing over 500 tonnes per unit, two massive Phase Shifting Transformers (PST) have successfully reached the Achêne substation after making their way by river and road. 🚚 This marks another milestone in strengthening Belgium’s electricity grid. The PST will play a crucial role in optimising power flows, preventing overloads, and enhancing cross-border energy exchanges—especially between Belgium and France. It’s a key asset for ensuring grid stability and allowing for the connection of more capacity in the face of growing renewables integration. 🔌 Months of planning and coordination, including with local authorities made this operation a success. Special thanks to all teams and partners involved for their professionalism in getting the PST into place. 🤝 Take a look at how our teams worked around the clock to achieve this impressive feat. 🎥

  • We are bridging research and system operations, with new ways of technical cooperation across Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, the United States. The Elia Group Research Challenge is connecting research directly with system operations. This first-of-its-kind initiative from Elia Group and 50Hertz Transmission GmbH, in collaboration with Energinet, is seeking to deliver real-world impact in our control centre. 🤝 🎯 We are collaborating closely with research teams to address high-impact challenges around electrical engineering and IT: 1) Optimizing grid monitoring using power system simulators (Fraunhofer IEE - Dr. Benjamin Requardt, Timo Rehwald, Gourab Schmidt-Banerjee) 2) Exploring new methods for network control via impedance frequency scans (Fraunhofer IEE – Farhad Safargholi and ETH ZürichFlorian Dorfler, Mohamed Abdalmoaty) 3) Speeding up load flow calculations (Forschungszentrum Jülich and Dirk Witthaut) 4) Enhancing simulation speed in Modelica (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Luigi Vanfretti) The one year-long challenge focusses on how to collaborate better and with greater agility with research teams. As we are nearing the half-way point, we brought our Research Challenge team together at the Global Systems Operation Summit in Berlin. 📈 Here are the top three lessons learned so far: ✅ Quality research benefits from stronger definition of its scope and milestones. ✅ Creativity is a must! Research is about testing, asking questions, and experimenting. ✅ Close collaboration and regular check-ins between research and business are key. We are looking forward to the second half of the challenge, and in particular to seeing the results of the research questions! #EnergyTransition #Innovation #Collaboration #EliaGroup #50Hertz #Systemoperations

  • 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗮: 𝗔 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱-𝘁𝗵𝗲-𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗘𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 Mid-September, the last caisson for 2025, was installed. This marks an important step in the development of the world’s first energy island. The offshore operations for this year have now concluded, involving a team of over 300 people and a fleet of 15 specialized vessels, including crane ships, supply vessels, and tugboats. The caissons — massive concrete structures weighing up to 22,000 tons — form the outer walls of the future island, located 45 km off the Belgian coast. Once completed, the island will connect offshore wind farms and may also serve as an energy hub for international interconnectors to the Belgian electricity grid. The project is being delivered through a Belgian collaboration between Elia Transmission Belgium, the project owner, and TM Edison, a consortium led by DEME Group and Jan De Nul Group, as the contractor. Preparations for the next phase are already underway, with offshore activities set to resume in the spring of 2026, weather permitting.

  • In January, a fire at the Zandvliet high-voltage substation severely damaged one of four phase-shifting transformers (PSTs). These are key components for cross-border electricity exchange between Belgium and the Netherlands. ⚡   A cross-functional team, including teams from Maintenance (MAC), Environment, Asset Management, and Sustainability, worked together to investigate the cause, assess the impact, and explore recovery solutions. Elia turned the incident into a catalyst for innovation. This summer, along with partners launched a large-scale pilot project to recover and repurpose the PST’s materials. This was mainly to recover copper and steel for future use in an Elia transformer—closing the loop on valuable raw materials. ♻️ The initiative is fully aligned with our sustainability programme ActNow, under the pillar of circular economy and environmental protection. Even when faced with unforeseen adversity, like the fire at Zandvliet, we were able to reduce waste and maximise resource efficiency. The result was a tangible step forward in local circularity. Thanks also to the partnership with Hitachi Energy in piloting this closed material loop in the transformer industry.  Check out the video to see just how we made this happen! 🎥 #HitachiEnergy #innovation #circularity
