The European Food Banks Federation brings together 351 Food Banks and branches in 30 countries.

About us

Founded in 1986, the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) is a non-profit organisation which brings together 352 Food Banks and branches, with members in 30 countries in Europe. They recover surplus food, a large part of which would otherwise be thrown away, and redistribute it to charitable organizations and social centers taking care of people in need. In 2023, the 352 Food Banks from the FEBA network redistributed over 839,942 tonnes of food through 44,374 charitable organisations, assisting 12.8 million deprived people. All this was possible thanks to the professionalism of 98,662 co-workers, 94% of whom were volunteers.

  • It’s #WorldFoodDay, and FEBA is joining The Global FoodBanking Network for the powerful #FoodForChange champions campaign! 🍎 When we were asked to join this initiative, we immediately knew who our champions are: the incredible volunteers and staff across our 30 European member organisations. In 2024, their dedication resulted in collecting, distributing, and sharing 834,000 tonnes of food and serving 12.2 million people in need. But this essential work highlights a crushing paradox: while one-third of the world’s food is lost or wasted annually, 30% of the global population is still moderately or severely food insecure. 🟢 This situation demands immediate solutions. Food is the solution. By recovering edible, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and getting it onto the tables of those in need, food banks are simultaneously addressing hunger and climate action. It's time to champion change. Be part of #FoodForChange.

  • 💡 "Food banks bring data, logistics networks, and community connections that are essential for translating high-level directives into ground-level results. FEBA acts as a bridge between the EU’s regulatory ambitions and practical implementation in the field."   This was the message from our representative, Honorary President Jacques Vandenschrik, at the recent World AgriFood Innovation (WAFI) Conference in Beijing. The formal inclusion of FEBA at the event—which largely featured representatives from the southern hemisphere—underlined the leverage our network provides.   On this occasion, global voices on food security and waste converged. Alongside our president, the food banking world was well represented by The Global FoodBanking Network CEO Lisa Moon.   👏 Among the most significant regulatory developments discussed was the revision of the EU Waste Framework Directive. Adopted in September 2025, this directive is groundbreaking as it introduces, for the first time, binding food waste reduction targets for Member States.   As environmental issues were hot on the list of many discussions, the U.S. absence was felt — not just symbolically, but practically.   The U.S. institutional silence on topics as transatlantic perspectives on food waste, surplus donation, and supply-chain regulation contrasts sharply with Europe’s newly codified consensus on mandatory waste reduction and redistribution.   🟢 FEBA is integral to this change, embracing the European shift to a proactive stakeholder that builds effective governance frameworks around food waste.

  • Strengthening cooperation between food banks and local authorities is essential to building more sustainable, resilient, and fair food systems. This is what the European project FoodCLIC is about: creating urban environments that favour access to healthy, just, and sustainably produced food. 🥢TODAY — October 13 2025 — FEBA is proud to support the launch of the FoodCLIC European Platform for Food Policy Networks. The platform is a unique meeting point for the food expert community: Food policy networks, food policy councils, associations, and other forms of multi-stakeholder coordination active in the food system at municipal, regional, or national levels. 🪴 FoodCLIC brings together resources, networks, and expertise, making them accessible, connected, and impactful. Built on values of inclusion, transparency, and collaboration, the EU platform helps local experiences gain visibility and influence at the European level, cultivating collaboration among cities, regions, and food system actors. Want to become part of this space dedicated to exchanging best practices, inspiring innovation, and accelerating Europe's transition to a sustainable food future? • The European Commission’s proposal for the next #EUBudget promises €100 billion for social spending, but as this analysis shows, this figure may not tell the full story. Without clear guarantees for inclusion, poverty reduction, and real local participation, there is a risk of less direct investment in people than under today’s budget. While the ambition to eradicate poverty by 2050 is welcome, the ambition must be matched by investment and action that reach those facing food insecurity, material deprivation, and social exclusion. We endorse this statement to ensure the next EU budget truly delivers on Europe’s social ambitions. 🟢 Read our full joint statement: https://lnkd.in/ds9Wissr

Europe’s social ambitions, including the eradication of poverty by 2050 and achievement of the 2030 social targets, depend on strong, protected funding for inclusion, rights and local action. The European Commission’s new proposal for the next EU budget promises €100 billion for social spending. But as our analysis shows, the figure may not tell the full story. Without funding guarantees for inclusion, poverty reduction, and real local participation, this could mean less direct investment in people than today’s budget. Our coalition of 52 European network calls for: ✅ Guaranteed funding for social inclusion, child poverty, and material deprivation ✅ Stronger safeguards and monitoring ✅ Empowerment of local and regional actors Read our full joint statement: https://lnkd.in/ds9Wissr #SocialEurope #ESFplus #EUBudget #SocialRights #PovertyReduction

  • 📌 Thanks to the newly revised Waste Framework Directive, food donation to food banks is expected to be facilitated, helping reduce food waste while enabling our members to continue focusing on what matters most—reaching and supporting the most vulnerable.   The new WFD once again reinforces the food banks' contribution to the fight against food loss and waste. However, why are these legislative changes significant? ❇️ To set out concrete targets for the reduction of food waste. ❇️ To strengthen food donation and recognise it as the second tier in the food waste hierarchy. ❇️ To solidify the crucial role of food banks for food loss reduction by legally requiring their involvement in the food waste reduction process.   📚 Additional details regarding the Directive can be found below.

  • We're wrapping up the reflections on the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste with immense gratitude and energy!   Thank you to the European Food Forum for co-organising the event 'From Excess to Impact – Reducing Food Waste and Feeding Communities' at the European Parliament and to MEPs Mario Furore, Stefan Köhler, and Pietro Fiocchi for hosting. The discussion, moderated by Ignazio Corrao, underlined our fundamental belief that food waste is a tragedy that affects society and the environment. To address this and create a sustainable food future for all, there must be strong cooperation among all parties involved across the entire food supply chain.   The key takeaways from the event's debate are two: ✅ The Urgency: We can't afford to waste food when, as our president Bernard Valluis mentioned during his opening speech, "if global food waste was a country, it would be third largest emitter of greenhouse gases.". Transforming our Global Food Policy is essential.   ✅ The Collaboration: We celebrated the power of partnerships, from the essential global legal research provided by Emily Broad Leib from the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic (FLPC) on Food Policy frameworks to the on-the-ground policy advice given by Angela Ruttledge from FoodCloud to the Irish government.   FEBA advocates for legally binding obligations for member states to reduce food waste and ensure food banks are always consulted on donation agreements.    📌 As MEP Ana Miranda Paz claimed, MEPs, governments, and society have a moral obligation to address food waste. When all stakeholders unite, from across the food supply chain, change happens. 🔵 We want to build a future where no good food goes to waste and no one goes hungry.   #IDAFLW #WeAreFEBA

  • 🍏 Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste #IDAFLW, and it highlights a paradox that we face every single day:   While tons of perfectly good food are being lost or wasted across the supply chain, millions of our neighbours are struggling with food insecurity.   💚 FEBA's mission is clear: Fighting Hunger, Tackling Food Waste, Building Solidarity. Our network of 30 countries around Europe demonstrates this commitment daily, distributing approximately 834,000 tonnes of food to 12.2 million beneficiaries in 2024 alone. This extraordinary work is driven by our values — solidarity, resilience, empowerment, transparency, and sustainability — and we are proud to see them reflected in everything we do.   🔵 We are committed to ensuring our external image reflects our core purpose, and that's why we've chosen this day to officially launch our new website www.eurofoodbank.org   We invite you to visit it and to discover more about the work we do!   #WeAreFEBA
