The European Food Banks Federation brings together 351 Food Banks and branches in 30 countries.
About us
Founded in 1986, the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) is a non-profit organisation which brings together 352 Food Banks and branches, with members in 30 countries in Europe. They recover surplus food, a large part of which would otherwise be thrown away, and redistribute it to charitable organizations and social centers taking care of people in need. In 2023, the 352 Food Banks from the FEBA network redistributed over 839,942 tonnes of food through 44,374 charitable organisations, assisting 12.8 million deprived people. All this was possible thanks to the professionalism of 98,662 co-workers, 94% of whom were volunteers.

📌 Last week, our Senior Policy Officer Ignazio Corrao joined Die Tafel Österreich in Vienna for the launch of The Global Food Donation Policy Atlas in Austria, an initiative that holds profound importance for us : The Atlas evaluates the legal landscape of food loss and waste around the world and offers recommendations to expand food donation. FEBA is driving this project forward and scaling its impact throughout Europe. We deeply appreciate the foundational work of the Harvard Law School Food Law and Policy Clinic and The Global FoodBanking Network to facilitate food donations worldwide. 🟢 The rich panel discussion featured Alexandra Carina Gruber, MD. at Tafel Österreich, Felicitas Schneider, Food Loss & Waste Expert at Thünen Institute and Trevor Findley, Clinical Instructor at Harvard Law School. We are appreciative and enthusiastic about the audience's multi-perspective debate! It's a powerful reminder of how strong collaboration keeps us motivated to scale food donation, reduce waste, and support communities. 🍎 A massive thank you to Tafel Österreich for hosting an excellent event and arranging field visits that brought our work to life.

It’s #WorldFoodDay, and FEBA is joining The Global FoodBanking Network for the powerful #FoodForChange champions campaign! 🍎 When we were asked to join this initiative, we immediately knew who our champions are: the incredible volunteers and staff across our 30 European member organisations. In 2024, their dedication resulted in collecting, distributing, and sharing 834,000 tonnes of food and serving 12.2 million people in need. But this essential work highlights a crushing paradox: while one-third of the world’s food is lost or wasted annually, 30% of the global population is still moderately or severely food insecure. 🟢 This situation demands immediate solutions. Food is the solution. By recovering edible, nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and getting it onto the tables of those in need, food banks are simultaneously addressing hunger and climate action. It's time to champion change. Be part of #FoodForChange.

💡 "Food banks bring data, logistics networks, and community connections that are essential for translating high-level directives into ground-level results. FEBA acts as a bridge between the EU’s regulatory ambitions and practical implementation in the field." This was the message from our representative, Honorary President Jacques Vandenschrik, at the recent World AgriFood Innovation (WAFI) Conference in Beijing. The formal inclusion of FEBA at the event—which largely featured representatives from the southern hemisphere—underlined the leverage our network provides. On this occasion, global voices on food security and waste converged. Alongside our president, the food banking world was well represented by The Global FoodBanking Network CEO Lisa Moon. 👏 Among the most significant regulatory developments discussed was the revision of the EU Waste Framework Directive. Adopted in September 2025, this directive is groundbreaking as it introduces, for the first time, binding food waste reduction targets for Member States. As environmental issues were hot on the list of many discussions, the U.S. absence was felt — not just symbolically, but practically. The U.S. institutional silence on topics as transatlantic perspectives on food waste, surplus donation, and supply-chain regulation contrasts sharply with Europe’s newly codified consensus on mandatory waste reduction and redistribution. 🟢 FEBA is integral to this change, embracing the European shift to a proactive stakeholder that builds effective governance frameworks around food waste.
