In the +200 policy events I’ve moderated… this is possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve seen on stage 💖 The ‘Closing remarks’ part of any event programme can be dreadful. It’s that point in time at events where everyone disconnects, feels forced to sit down for 10 more minutes to listen to the token speaker doing predictable statements that were likely pre-written anyway, while longing for their drink and the networking part. Society of Audiovisual Authors chose to do things differently. They invited Lisette Ma Neza, Brussels’ first city poet, to join the event and turn the main messages into this beautiful poetry. I was seeking for love and care… and I found it, she said. Love and care for our creators, for the energy in the room, for our culture, for our pride, for our diversity. For our democracy. This was so stunningly beautiful and touching, it was difficult to take the floor just after Lisette. I was never this moved on stage, I had to take a couple deep breaths to pull up together. The audience was completely in awe. Those closing remarks made waves well after the event, with everyone around complimenting and praising Lisette’s work. Her ideas, the messages of the event, actually *landed* with the audience. And at a point in time when I’m falling out of love with policy events, this reminded me that things can be done differently, better, in a way that truly connects. This is the proof that Brussels events can be different. And that’s how you do it: by tapping into creativity and human connection.
