About us
SciMingo is a Brussels based non-profit organization involved in science communication. SciMingo aims to support scientists to help them communicate to the public to the maximum extent possible. We want to make research and its importance clearer to the general public; to help make the results of research and scientific insights more accessible, thus helping to strengthen interest in and support for science in society. In concrete terms, SciMingo wants to build a bridge between science, the press and the public by: • Stimulating and training researchers: SciMingo aims to sensitize and stimulate scientists to share their research with the public and to teach them how to communicate about science. • Promoting and popularizing science: SciMingo aims to promote and popularize science by bringing the research of young researchers at knowledge institutions to a wider audience. • Connecting science, press, and public: SciMingo wants to promote exchange between the press, scientists, and the public In this way, we want to contribute to a new generation of young researchers who are aware of the importance of science communication and who invest in it from the start of their careers. In this way, we hope to help install a real culture of science communication in the academic world in due course. The ultimate goal is to maximise the transfer of scientific research to society and to strengthen public support for science.

📚 Herfstvakantie was leesvakantie bij mtech+ Terwijl velen genoten van een welverdiende pauze, hebben onze collega’s zich met volle aandacht gezet aan het lezen van scripties voor de Vlaamse Scriptieprijs én de mtech+ deelprijs. Want achter elk eindwerk schuilt een verhaal dat het verdient om in de schijnwerpers geplaatst te worden. 🎓 En ook dit jaar werden we opnieuw verrast door de creativiteit en technische vernuftigheid van jonge onderzoekers. De scripties die we lazen, brachten ons van de ene verwondering in de andere: gaande van “Wanneer 1 programmeerfout miljoenen kost” tot “Nooit meer sportblessures?”. Wat een rijkdom aan ideeën, toepassingen en maatschappelijke relevantie! 🗓️ Morgen geven we de longlist door aan de externe jury. Eind november kennen we de drie finalisten voor de mtech+ deelprijs en dan schakelen we over naar de laatste fase, mét jullie erbij. We houden jullie op de hoogte! Een dikke merci aan alle collega’s die zelfs tijdens hun herfstvakantie tijd hebben vrijgemaakt om scripties na te lezen. Gisteren reikten we de 10e Vlaamse #PhDCup uit. Het werd een waar feest van de #wetenschapscommunicatie 🥳 Ewoud Jacobs (Universiteit Gent - Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO) kreeg de hoofdprijs uit handen van minister-president Matthias Diependaele voor zijn pitch 'Missie revalidatie-optimalisatie' 🙌 Daarin vertelde hij over een nieuwe revalidatiemethode om patiënten met knie-artrose te behandelen, zonder de nood aan dure knie-protheses. Taalkundige Melissa Schuring (KU Leuven - Vrije Universiteit Brussel) en farmaceutisch wetenschapper Mattijs Bulcaen (KU Leuven - Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen (FWO)) vervolledigen het podium. Bulcaen sleepte ook de publieksprijs in de wacht 🥇🥈🥉 Proficiat ook aan alle andere finalisten voor de schitterende pitches op deze jubileumeditie! 👏
