🚀 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚎 ☀️ 🌌 Can we predict solar storms before they strike Earth? 🌍 Understanding how magnetic energy builds up and triggers solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is key to protecting satellites, power grids, and communications from space weather events. Here’s what the research uncovered, which was recently published by Brigitte Schmieder, Jinhan Guo, Guillaume Aulanier, Anwesha Maharana, PhD & Stefaan Poedts: ⚡ Magnetic energy & helicity buildup in active solar regions are strong indicators of flare potential. 🌪️ Flux ropes forming along polarity inversion lines are the seeds of coronal mass ejections. 🛰️ The EUHFORIA model predicted CME arrival times at Earth with <3-hour accuracy. 🧩 Combining idealised and data-driven MHD models offers realistic forecasts but demands massive computational power. 💻 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚜𝚝𝚞𝚍𝚢 𝚛𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚍 𝚘𝚗 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚅𝚂𝙲'𝚜 𝚜𝚞𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚞𝚝𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚗𝚏𝚛𝚊𝚜𝚝𝚛𝚞𝚌𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚎 𝚝𝚘 𝚛𝚞𝚗 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚞𝚝𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚒𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚜𝚒𝚟𝚎 𝙼𝙷𝙳 𝚜𝚒𝚖𝚞𝚕𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚜 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚏𝚕𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚎𝚗𝚎𝚛𝚐𝚎𝚝𝚒𝚌𝚜, 𝙲𝙼𝙴 𝚒𝚗𝚒𝚝𝚒𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗, 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚑𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚘𝚜𝚙𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚌 𝚙𝚛𝚘𝚙𝚊𝚐𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗 — 𝚌𝚛𝚞𝚌𝚒𝚊𝚕 𝚏𝚘𝚛 𝚝𝚒𝚖𝚎𝚕𝚢 𝚜𝚙𝚊𝚌𝚎 𝚠𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚎𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚝𝚜. 🔍 Learn how high-performance computing powers solar storm prediction 👉 https://lnkd.in/eeSMMH8k 🔖 Explore more at 𝚁𝚎𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝚂𝚑𝚘𝚠𝚌𝚊𝚜𝚎 → https://lnkd.in/ez5q5k5q 📬 Subscribe to our newsletter → https://lnkd.in/eMCx_Cr7 #supercomputer #HPC #SolarPhysics #SpaceWeather #Astrophysics #MHD #Research #Innovation #Science

🎓 Congratulations, Dr. Melvin Geubbelmans! 👏 VSC warmly congratulates Melvin Geubbelmans on the successful defense of his PhD, “From whole slide imaging optimization to nuclei segmentation: computational approaches for non-small cell lung carcinoma.” His remarkable work — bridging AI and digital pathology — pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in medical image analysis. With the help of VSC’s Tier-1 infrastructure and data storage, Melvin and his collaborators analyzed 100 GB of high-resolution images to predict the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors. 🚀 Together with Dirk Valkenborg, Christel Faes, and Esther Wolfs, Melvin also took part in our VSC Success Story on PiDGiN project from Hasselt University and Data Science Institute (DSI) UHasselt, where the team shared how computational power and interdisciplinary collaboration can transform medical research. 💡 Projects like this exemplify how supercomputing accelerates innovation in healthcare and beyond. 📺 Watch both VSC Success Stories on PiDGiN project from Hasselt University and Data Science Institute (DSI) UHasselt : 1️⃣ Data Entry & Data Retrieval 👉 https://lnkd.in/eD8De9xc 2️⃣ Applications 👉 https://lnkd.in/egzGZSMf 🔗 Stay tuned for more inspiring success stories from the Flemish research community at www.vscentrum.be #Supercomputing #AI #DigitalPathology #Research #PhDDefense #SuccessStory
Very proud that Melvin Geubbelmans successfully defended his Ph.D. entitled "From whole slide imaging optimization to nuclei segmentation: computational approaches for non-small cell lung carcinoma". His work explores the boundaries of artificial intelligence and digital pathology. What a ride! Thanks to the scientific compute and Tier-1 data storage of VSC | Vlaams Supercomputer Centrum we were able to analyse 100 GB high-resolution images to predict the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors. A case in point is our new Edict image co-registration algorithm that is capable of handling these large data volumes. Congratulations Dr. Geubbelmans. Big shout out to Christel Faes, Esther Wolfs and Michiel Thomeer for being partners in crime in this PiDGiN project and thanks to UHasselt and Data Science Institute (DSI) UHasselt for funding and hosting this wonderful initiative. It really did made a difference and connected the relevant disciplines to bring AI and Pathology together.
