ICYMI❗️The European Commission has launched a call for evidence and a public consultation, inviting all interested stakeholders to contribute to the future #EuropeanInnovationAct. 🇪🇺A key deliverable of the EU Startup and Scaleup Strategy, the European Innovation Act will facilitate bringing innovative ideas to market across all sectors. 📈It will aim to address challenges in commercialising research results, strengthen collaboration between the industry and the academia, and improve access of innovative companies to markets, finance, talent and infrastructures. It will also create a more innovation-friendly regulatory, policy and investment environment across the EU, to give European innovators the tools they need to grow and scale within the EU and compete globally. 👨🏽‍💻The consultation addresses individuals and companies, industry representatives, representatives of SMEs, representatives of the startup community, members of academia and research institutions, representatives of the financial sector, public bodies, including public buyers, representatives of research and technology infrastructure, and other stakeholders. ⏳The call for evidence together with the public consultation are open for contributions until 3 October 2025 so have your say! 👉🏼More info: https://lnkd.in/etni9eBn

As a Commission, we’re pushing an agenda that addresses the climate crisis, boosts competitiveness and makes the EU more resilient in a volatile world. Today we made a big move with a new proposal for steel safeguards that checks all these boxes.   It’s a reaction to the many challenges faced by Europe’s steel industry today. Global overcapacity has caused price pressure. Together with high energy costs, this has led to low margins and profits. EU production has dropped from 190 million tonnes to 125 million tonnes since 2007, with nearly 100,000 jobs lost (25% of the workforce). And today’s production capacity is only being used at 67%.   If we don’t take bold action and protect our industry, we will lose this strategic sector. It’s vital for our independence and a major employer across Europe with great potential for clean growth. Instead of decarbonising, we run the risk of our industry relocating outside the EU. We can't let that happen.   We’ve had temporary steel safeguards in place, but today’s proposal is a permanent solution based on a tariff rate quota, which is half the current one, with a 50 % duty beyond this quota. In line with that same thinking, we’ll be strengthening the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism at the end of the year.   These choices reflect the challenges we face in today’s world. But they also show just how far we’ll go to stand by our industry, as it makes that huge clean transition leap and puts Europe in a position to lead the future economy. "Belgium climbs in UN innovation ranking" Belgium has risen to 21st place in the annual Global Innovation Index ranking of the world’s most innovative economies, published by the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO. Belgium climbs three positions to 21st – its best result since 2013 and one of the highest jumps within the region. Belgium has a strong base of Researchers (7th) and high Gross expenditure on R&D (6th) – equaling 3.3 percent of its GDP in 2023 – with significant contributions from business (high ranks in gross expenditure on R&D performed and financed by business, ranked 6th and 7th, respectively). It also ranks well in University industry and international engagement (14th), and in Research talent (11th) and Knowledge-intensive employment (11th).
