How can Belgian general practitioners (GPs) be better supported to meet growing healthcare demands? This new qualitative study explores how GPs across Belgium envision strengthening their practices through small-scale, multidisciplinary teams—most often with nurses, receptionists, and practice assistants. It also sheds light on the tools they see as essential for successful collaboration: shared EHRs, clear protocols, co-location, and care coordination. We are pleased to share our recent study: "Perspectives and Practices of Healthcare Leaders in Supporting Healthcare Worker Well-Being: A Reality Check" by Iris Reijmerink, Maarten J. van der Laan, Fedde Scheele, and Götz Wietasch. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are the backbone of our healthcare systems, and their well-being has never been more critical. While leaders play a pivotal role in supporting HCW well-being, there is limited clarity on how this role is operationalised in practice. Our study takes a closer look at how healthcare leaders perceive, monitor, and influence HCW well-being. 🎯Key Findings: • Broad Understanding: Healthcare leaders demonstrate a comprehensive awareness of the factors influencing well-being, encompassing personal, socioeconomic, and work-related domains. • Information Sources: Leaders rely mostly on informal "contact data" (day-to-day interactions) and formal "investigation data" (structured assessments). However, data collection processes are often inconsistent and sporadic. • Reactive Approach: While leaders acknowledge their capacity to influence well-being, their strategies tend to be reactive rather than proactive. Moreover, there is a notable tendency to redirect responsibility to other leaders or the individuals themselves. 💡Recommendations: 1. Proactive Leadership: Leaders across all hierarchical levels should take collective and active responsibility for promoting HCW well-being. 2. Systematic Data Collection: Introducing regular, structured approaches to monitoring well-being can provide the foundation for preventive measures. 3. Role Modelling: Leadership development should emphasise leading by example, with a focus on enhancing skills and strategies to support well-being effectively. 🌟 Takeaway: This study underscores the need for a deliberate shift from reactive practices to a preventive, multi-faceted approach to HCW well-being. In many global health systems it is still assumed that effective 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. Yet in practice, 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘀 are already 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁-𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. In a blog published for World Health Day, former 𝗧𝗨 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗳𝘁 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗿. 𝗶𝗿. Roos Marieke Oosting and colleagues offer 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 in resource-limited settings. The article shares concrete examples of context-specific innovations. For example, in Nigeria, 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿-𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 equipment is used instead of machines that rely on the electricity grid. Furthermore, in Rwanda, 𝗦𝗠𝗦-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 are used to ensure the system does not depend on internet connection and smartphones. However, technology alone does not drive progress. Roos and colleagues underline the need for robust support structures. These include local production capacity, repair networks, and policies that enable equitable partnerships. By shedding light on African-led solutions, this work helps 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 in global health. Research shows that physical training improves the sexual experience and health of women with metastatic breast cancer, as shown by researchers from NKI and UMC Utrecht who investigated this topic as part of an international consortium. Previous studies had already indicated that an exercise program could reduce symptoms and side effects for patients. Among 355 women from five European countries and Australia, half participated in a nine-month physical training program. Before starting the program, most women reported little to no sexual activity. The women who were sexually active reported experiencing little enjoyment. After six to nine months in the program, participants noticed improvements in their sexual well-being and overall health. They experienced fewer discomforts such as vaginal dryness compared to the control group. This shows that the program can be a valuable addition to the existing options for these women. Healthcare providers often recommend emotional support, lubricants, or hormonal therapies to relieve discomfort. However, these solutions do not always resolve sexual health issues and can lead to side effects such as mood swings or joint pain.
