I was elected as President of the student association school year ’14-‘15. In that period, I was responsible for the daily management of the student association (2000 members) and a team of 20 people I supervised. It was a very challenging but rewarding year, which I will always remember as one of the best years of my life.

I am most proud of our achievement to build the figurative foundations for a new student facility building. Back in ’12, we had to give up our ‘boerderijtje’ due to the construction of the adjacent highway. Since then, our association went through tough times, without a place to organize her activities and without a central bar to meet fellow vet students. During the year of my presidency, we developed a plan to construct and finance a new student building which we defended and got approved subsequently by our faculty’s dean, the faculty council and the general university council of the university. In 2018, the building was officially opened.

We succeeded in financing the project with own resources, municipal-, Flemish- and European subsidies which led to the construction and opening of the new building in…

This consultancy project was performed in a scope of two months and aimed to help VSF-Belgium develop and implement a performance measurement tool, adapted to the reality of the non-profit and improve the accountability within the organization. For this study, we assessed the way of working and communicating of the entire organization, both at the headquarters in Belgium, as at their regional and local level in Rwanda.

    The abstract:
VSF-Belgium seeks to increase performance measurement by implementing a mix of performance indicators. This will provide the management objective information to take sound managerial decisions and actions. Hence it can achieve its vision, mission, and strategy faster and more direct. The required willingness to adapt a performance measurement framework, is now present in the management of the organization. In order to implement such a framework, the staff should be fully committed. Hence, the framework should be simple but effective and everyone should be convinced of its purpose and future benefits. The model of Abo Ramadan, to implement performance measurement specifically for NGOs, together with Parmenter’s model, for implementing performance management in the profit-driven organization, were combined to develop our own methodology, adapted to the reality of VSF-Belgium and its environment. Different steps were already taken by the organization towards implementing performance measurement. Already existing structures and new tools combined, will form a fully-fledged framework. Our Framework allows objective performance measurement of different pillars (HR, Internal Communication, Finance and Program) of the organization while limiting the increase of workload among staff. The report describes the pillars extensively, together with recommendations on general managerial aspects and performance indicators.Subsequently, a comprehensive guide is developed to direct the organization further trough the implementation of the new framework.

Comparison of antimicrobial resistance profiles of commensal Escherichia coli obtained from different animal, human and environmental niches.

This research focused on investigating the resistance levels and transmission of and between different ecological niches as livestock, surface water, nursing home residents and pets. Therefore, E. coli were isolated out of each niche, purified and identified by MALDI-TOF. Subsequently, Resistant profiles were created. Results clearly showed that high levels of resistance against critically classified antimicrobial classes such as aminoglycosides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and third and fourth generation cephalosporin, were seen in the broiler, human and pork population. Further substantial similarities in resistant levels, multidrug resistance and the antimicrobial resistant index between the poultry, swine and nursing home residents strongly suggested an association between these ecological niches with consequence for public health.
