Accent, language, and speaker recognition with Deep Learning

Creation of a neural network able to recognize the similarities between two recordings at the accent, language and speaker identity level. I used a structure similar to WaveNet in a siamese network to allow immediate comparison.

Kitchen VR

We developed a Virtual Environment of a kitchen on Unity. In that kitchen, a student is told the steps of a recipe in Spanish and needs to replicate what is being said (e.g.: cut the cucumber and put it in the blender). This is used by the department of foreign languages at HEC Liège as an integrated part of the Spanish course, in order to diversify teaching and apply vocabulary related to the kitchen.

Did you know that AI models don't just hallucinate? They also produce what researchers call “Machine Bullshit” — convincing but untrue output. This includes: - Empty Rhetoric - Weasel Words - Paltering - Unverified Claims - Sycophancy In public health, this can mean fabricated research, wrong diagnoses, and biased algorithms. Once embedded in decision-making, these errors are far harder to detect than hallucinatory falsehoods. As public health leaders and practitioners, we need to implement technical safeguards, but the bigger fix is human vigilance and review. Accuracy in public health is non-negotiable. “Interoperability runs on open source, not open standards.” In the latest episode of the Digital Health Hackers podcast, I interview two sharp voices in health IT: Daniel Kapitan — data scientist focused on health data architecture Joost Holslag — clinician-turned-informatics consultant and openEHR specialist The conversation started with a landmark paper co-written by leaders from OMOP, openEHR, and FHIR (For ref: https://lnkd.in/edCKKrQp). When the people shaping those standards sit at the same table, you know it’s worth paying attention. The paper suggested a clean split: openEHR → structured clinical data for care and administration FHIR → exchange via APIs OMOP → population-level analytics But what happens in the real world? - In the Netherlands and East Africa, Daniel found FHIR showing up everywhere, for exchange, as the system of record and even in the analytics pipeline. Why? The open-source ecosystem around FHIR made it the most practical option. - Joost reminded us that this convenience comes at a cost he calls ‘semantic debt’. If different teams model “blood pressure” differently, you lose comparability later. His message: build structure early (as with openEHR archetypes), or complexity comes back downstream. Other lessons that stood out: 1. Decide where to handle complexity: at data entry (openEHR) or downstream (FHIR). 2. Keep transactional (care) and analytical (reporting) workloads separate. 3. There’s no perfect database, use the right tool for the job. 4. AI can draft mappings, but humans need to stay accountable. Takeaway: Open standards are necessary, but not enough. Interoperability only works when open-source implementations, governance, and shared semantics are in place.
