45 dredgers. 258.8 million cubic meters. Completed in 12 months. The Suez Canal project was an incredible feat: This project seemed impossible when I first saw it. But as my Belgian partner Lieven always says: "Follow the money." The trail led to the UAE, who were financing the project. NMDC were the JV leaders. Within 3 weeks, a joint venture of the world's leading dredging companies was formed and deployed to Egypt. What followed was simply amazing. The scale was mind-boggling: 45 dredgers working simultaneously. Cutter suction dredgers and trailing suction hopper dredgers from Boskalis, Van Oord, NMDC Energy, Jan De Nul Group, DEME Group, and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC. 258.8 million cubic meters of soil dredged in record-breaking speed. The scope: 35 kilometers of new parallel canal plus deepening and widening 37 kilometers of existing canal to 24 meters depth. $8.2 billion project completed in just 12 months. The results speak for themselves: Daily capacity nearly doubled. Transit time for southbound traffic cut from 18 hours to 11 hours. Ships with drafts up to 20.1 meters can now pass through. The original Suez Canal opened in 1869 - 164 kilometers long, 8 meters deep. It's been the fastest shipping route between Europe and Asia ever since, but capacity was the chokepoint. Large sections were only suitable for one-way traffic. Ships sailed in convoys, waiting in basins for opposing traffic. Global trade was growing, but the canal couldn't keep up. Egypt's 2014 announcement seemed ambitious to the point of fantasy. But the financing was real, the expertise was available, and the urgency was genuine. When the world's leading dredging companies combine forces with proper financing and clear objectives, impossible timelines become achievable realities.
