Time Matters in TMS: Resilience of Top-Down Attention A recent study by our lab at Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience | Maastricht University explored whether the timing of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the frontal eye fields (FEF) would disrupt attentional control, and whether such disruption would vary across the cue–target interval. Participants performed a spatial cue-target attention task while receiving focal TMS to the FEF. We quantified alpha power modulations using EEG in the entire cue-target interval, and also split into early and late time windows after cue presentation. Findings revealed that TMS of either FEF did not impair behavioural performance, suggesting resilience in attentional control. This absence of a behavioral effect should however not be mistaken by an absence of effective TMS intervention. TMS had an effect on alpha power but this aloha power modulation was time-sensitive. TMS had its strongest effect in the early post-cue window leading us to believe that such a delayed diminished effect suggests the role of compensatory mechanisms over time. Implications: These findings highlight how the timing of neural interference matters. Early disruption reveals covert neural dynamics and supports the idea of temporal resilience in attention networks. Yolande Pijnenburg, director at both Amsterdam Neuroscience and the Alzheimer Center Amsterdam at Amsterdam UMC, discusses a recent Harvard study (published in Nature) that shows that lithium occurs naturally in the brain, shields it from neurodegeneration, and helps maintain the normal function of all major brain cell types. The findings - 10 years in the making - are based on a series of experiments in mice and on analyses of human brain tissue and blood samples from individuals in various stages of cognitive health. What do these insights mean for the field of Alzheimer’s research? And what is the current state of treatment for this brain disease? 📢 Publication alert Together with my colleagues at Antwerp University Hospital and AZ Voorkempen Malle, we just published a study evaluating three clinical decision tools for predicting ICU admission in patients with COVID-19 within 24 hours of ED presentation. We compared the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2), the Pandemic Respiratory Infection Emergency System Triage (PRIEST) score and the American College of Emergency Physicians COVID-19 Severity Classification (ACEPSC). 🔎 We found that all three tools reliably predict ICU admission within 24 hours. ACEPSC was strongest for ruling in ICU need, however NEWS2 proved especially valuable for everyday practice: it is simple, quick to calculate, already widely used, and highly effective especially for ruling out ICU admission (which is the aim during a pandemic in my opinion). 💡 For ER nurses and doctors, this means that the NEWS(2), a tool developed before COVID-19, still offers the most practical support for safe, evidence-based triage in patients with pandemic respiratory infection. #PressureUlcers (#PressureInjuries) on the heel remain one of the most devastating yet often preventable #wounds in clinical #WoundCare. In our latest, just published International Wound Journal article (https://lnkd.in/exRpkRcV), we present breakthrough evidence on a next-generation prophylactic dressing: ALLEVYN COMPLETE CARE (Smith+Nephew). By combining frictional energy absorber effectiveness (FEAE) testing with anatomically-realistic finite element modelling, we demonstrated that this soft silicone multi-layer dressing dissipates damaging shear forces internally, and eliminates peak mechanical stress and strain concentrations in the heel soft tissues. This work sets a new benchmark for quantitatively evaluating #PressureUlcerPrevention / #PressureInjuryPrevention (PUP / PIP) dressings and highlights critical design principles for future innovations.
