What if the next big thing in textiles has already been thrown away? 🗑️ Giulio Bonazzi sees discarded items as a source of opportunity. In fact, he’s made it his business to create value out of synthetic nylon waste. Giulio is the CEO of Aquafil Group. At their factory in Slovenia, they make ECONYL, a material identical to traditional nylon except for one thing: it's created entirely from waste. Each year over 70 million tonnes of synthetic fibre is generated, but traditional nylon often ends up in the bin after use. ECONYL® brand addresses this waste problem directly. It's also produced with 70-90% fewer emissions than its non-recycled counterpart. Aquafil are proving that we don’t need to extract materials from the earth every time we create something new. Today marks a major step forward for 🧪🌱 the European chemical industry, a cornerstone of our industrial resilience and competitiveness. The newly adopted European Chemicals Industry Action Plan sets out concrete measures to help secure the competitiveness of our chemical industry, which contributes to over 96% of manufactured goods. ✅ At the heart of this effort? Innovation and boosting competitive, safe and sustainable products. This was also underlined by the Life Sciences Strategy presented last week. We are working on this full speed through: 💪 A revised Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) chemicals and materials framework, helping industry replace substances of concern with safer, more sustainable and competitive alternatives. 💪 The launch of EU Innovation and Substitution Hubs, using the SSbD framework to accelerate and scale up innovation. The SSbD framework will promote collaboration among product designers, chemical companies, scientists and research organisations. The Commission will facilitate access to the necessary digital and physical infrastructure to develop, test and scale up SSbD innovations. 💪 The Advanced Materials Act in 2026, which will also stimulate and reward innovation in the chemicals sector. The SSbD framework is shaping up to become a global benchmark — for safer, more sustainable and competitive products & for smarter and more efficient industrial innovation. In 2024, we completed our first Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) — a pivotal step in aligning sustainability with strategic decision-making and the business to the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The DMA is a structured process, used to identify and assess which sustainability topics, impacts, risks and opportunities are most relevant to our business. This involves assessing how our business impacts society and the environment, but also how external events have an impact on us. The DMA process included five key phases: 1️⃣ Current state assessment 2️⃣ Value chain mapping 3️⃣ Stakeholder engagement 4️⃣ IRO scoring 5️⃣ Final topic prioritisation We engaged a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders to validate our findings and ensure relevance.
