Ursula von der Leyen has been the President of the European Commission since 2019. She steered the EU’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the energy crisis. In her new mandate, she wants to work for a more resilient and competitive Europe that delivers prosperity, protects people, and defends democracy while continuing to lead the global fight against climate change. Before 2019, Ursula von der Leyen was a Minister at federal level in Germany for more than 14 years and responsible for family, then labour and social affairs, and later defence.
