Understanding the risks of online platforms is 🗝️ to creating a safer digital world. New rules under the 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁 unlock unprecedented access to crucial data from very large platforms and search engines for vetted researchers. Qualified researchers will be able to study how online platforms influence us both as individuals and as members of society. This means answering questions such as: ▪️How do VLOPs and VLOSEs protect consumers from financial scams? ▪️Why do users see certain recommendations for content or ads? ▪️Does seeing this type of content influence their wellbeing? Preliminary findings on TikTok and Meta under the Digital Services Act. Online users must be aware of their rights — and also have the tools to exercise them. The European Commission has found that TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram breach transparency and user empowerment obligations under the DSA. What does it mean? ↓ 🔔 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 If you come across illegal material — such as child sexual abuse material, terrorist content, or financial scams — you should be able to easily report it. However, Instagram’s and Facebook’s reporting tools are lengthy and complicated, discouraging users from taking action. 🔔 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 If your content is removed or your account suspended, Instagram’s and Facebook’s internal complaint tools don’t allow you to submit evidence — limiting your right to appeal their content moderation decisions. 🔔 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 If you are a researcher, you should be able to access public data to understand how users, including minors, are exposed to illegal or harmful content. This information is essential to study the impact of online platforms on our physical and mental health. However, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok’s procedures fail to make this information accessible. 🏃🔥The message is very dramatic and urgent, and there is a suspicious link underneath. If you recognise the pattern, you have been a target of SMiShing - stealing data via SMS protocol. The SMS might contain any announcement; from winning the lottery to a car accident. However, you can always recognise it by the immediate call to action. Unless you want to donate your money to scammers, do not enter your credit card details. On our way to securing Europe’s connectivity! Visiting Riga, Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen announced new funding and progress made in strengthening Europe’s critical submarine cable infrastructures with a key report under the EU Action Plan on Cable Security. The EVP said: “These new EU funding opportunities will help us strengthen the resilience of Europe’s submarine cable networks – our digital lifelines”. With €20 million under the Digital Europe Programme, the new funding will support the creation of Regional Cable Hubs and stress-testing the resilience of undersea cable infrastructures. The report presented today maps existing and planned infrastructures, assesses risks, and sets stress-testing guidelines. It’s a major deliverable of the Cable Security Action Plan, presented in February 2025.
