🛡️🌍Important week ahead for global heath security! I am happy to host the Global Health Security Initiative (GHSI) meeting, bringing together the European Commission, G7 countries, Mexico and the World Health Organization in Brussels. In this rapidly changing health security landscape, the work of the GHSI on matters such as respiratory diseases and preparedness against the avian flu, bio-threats and laboratory work is of utmost importance. We are constantly adapting to the evolving needs of our Member States. And the EU Preparedness Union Strategy is a testament to these needs. Under the EU health security legislation on cross-border health threats, we are strengthening new areas of cooperation in the health area, namely civilian and military preparedness and readiness. We are also strengthening the structure of the Health Security Committee (HSC), which will be meeting later this week. And the newly proposed Biotech Act focuses on biosecurity safeguards, including protecting against the misuse of biotechnologies and boosting the EU’s defence capabilities. At global level, we are working closely with our GHSI partners to ensure a stronger health security framework – with tangible results on the ground.

Coming soon! Faster access to safe medical devices throughout the EU. In December, we proposed a major simplification of EU rules for medical devices. The EU medical devices market, estimated at €170 billion in 2024, is the second largest in the world. 🌍 However, current EU rules lead to unnecessary costs, uncertainty for companies, and delays for patients. Our proposal will change all of this! It will: 🔹 Streamline EU rules, making them easier, faster and more effective 🔹 Support digitalisation and innovation 🔹 Help companies adapt to changing patient needs and market conditions And most importantly, it will do all this while still maintaining the highest safety standards. By improving the environment for medical device companies in Europe, we are meeting our #1 goal: To give EU patients faster access to safe and effective medical devices, whenever they need them. 🌟State of Health in the EU 2025 report out today! The report, launched by the Commission in partnership with OECD Social and European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, shows that Europe urgently needs innovative and resilient heath systems to improve healthcare and boost competitiveness. Today’s synthesis report identifies four critical areas for improvement, as well as the EU support mechanisms designed to address them: 🔹 Fighting non-communicable diseases: The Commission will soon unveil the EU Cardiovascular Health Plan to address non-communicable diseases, targeting diabetes and obesity. 🔹Accelerating digital health transformation: The European Health Data Space (EHDS) is accelerating digital transformation of healthcare. All Member States now provide access to electronic health records and investments in ePrescriptions, AI integration, and digital governance through #EU4Health and other EU funding programmes. 🔹Strengthening primary care: The EU Cohesion Funds and Recovery and Resilience Facility are helping EU countries to expand primary care, especially in rural areas. 🔹Access to affordable medicines & innovation: The Critical Medicines Act and the upcoming reform of the pharmaceutical legislation aim to ensure affordable access to medicines across the EU. The Biotech Act that we proposed in December aims to make the EU a world-leading hub for biotechnology. We know that a major obstacle for Europe’s biotech sector today is access to funding and investment. The Biotech Act has a range of ambitious measures to address this. 🤝 As an important first step, we have partnered with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to mobilise €10 billion in investment for biotechnology in 2026-27. 🔍 The BioTechEU initiative will provide European biotech companies and innovative start-ups with much-needed funding to scale-up and grow. This is good news for innovators across Europe. And it is good news for European patients, who will benefit from the cutting-edge new treatments and therapies that a more competitive Life Sciences sector can deliver.
