✅ Our fight against food waste has reached another level - we welcome the political agreement on the revision of the Waste Framework Directive.
With the revised rules, the EU countries pledge to deliver consistent progress toward achieving legally binding food waste reduction targets set by the Commission: halving food waste per person at the retail and consumer levels by 2030.
This means that Member States must take necessary measures in order to reduce food waste by:
🔹10%, in processing and manufacturing,
🔹30% (per capita), jointly at retail and consumption (restaurants, food services and households).
We will continue supporting the Member States in achieving this target through sharing best practices and learning through the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste as well as providing action grants.

💡 Why is the fight against food waste so important?
Each year, over 58 million tonnes of food are wasted in the EU—equivalent to 70 kg per person.
This waste translates into an economic loss of approximately €132 billion.
Shockingly, around 10% of all food in households, restaurants, schools, hospitals, and other institutions goes to waste. Meanwhile, over 37 million people in the EU struggle to afford a quality meal every other day - creating a stark contrast that demands urgent action.
When it comes to food waste, everyone has a role to play, and the best place is to start in our own kitchen.
