Science, research and innovation are one of the most valuable goods we have. President Ursula von der Leyen made it clear in her State of the Union speech this morning: they are key for Europe’s future. European Commission's initiatives such as Choose Europe and a reinforced Horizon Europe programme are crucial to attract more talent, support researchers and ensure scientific freedom. Europe must step up where others stepped away. By investing in science, research and innovation, we can ensure the EU remains a leader in addressing global challenges and creating a better future for all. Ekaterina Zaharieva #SOTEU #ChooseEurope

Take part in our survey for the European Water Academy (EUWA)! We're looking for insights and expressions of interest from water-related organisations across Europe. Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the development and implementation of the EUWA. As a key element of the European Water Resilience Strategy, the Academy will build the knowledge, skills, and expertise to ensure a water-resilient continent. It will offer advanced training, support innovation and improve collaboration between public and private sectors. Bringing together scientists, water sector experts, academic institutions and key industries, the EUWA is structured as a network of networks, united by three core principles: 1. Lab-to-Fab Principle: Developing scalable, market-ready solutions to address water challenges. 2. Living Labs Principle: Using real-world sites for testing and training. 3. Hands-on Training: Providing local-language courses, customer discovery, and public engagement to ensure broad acceptance and adoption. What a ride! The European Research and Innovation Days have come to an end, we are now leaving behind two non-stop days full of memorable connections and impactful sessions and on scientific excellence & competitiveness. Today, we have learnt how Lucy Hawking, science communicator and author, ignites children’s and adults’ love for science with humour, emotions but also scientific data. From the wonders of scientific discovery, we moved to the European Research Area Act. For Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva it should be ambitious and bring real change, while being realistic at the same time. The #EUResearchArea will help make the fifth freedom a reality, as she pointed out. Our speakers also underlined the urgency to achieve the 3% Research & Development investment target in the EU. The rest of the world has not waited for us. EU-funded initiatives were one of the main highlights of these two days. Our exhibition featured 17 projects that bring real impact to citizens and the economy, from AI-tools assisting blind people in their walks to a digital twin of the ocean and needle-free injections. It’s now time to say goodbye, we cannot wait for the next edition of the #RIDaysEU.

That’s a wrap for Day 1 of the #RIDaysEU 🎉 From the future of Horizon Europe to startups and scaleups and AI in Science, we are leaving with our notebooks full of ideas. President Ursula von der Leyen made it clear that the European Commission is determined to make the EU the best place in the world for research and innovation - through talent, funding and also scaling-up. With Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva, we analysed how to prepare a bright future for EU research & innovation. A key task is to complete the single market to be competitive - we will be stronger if we are united and if we tackle fragmentation. Artificial intelligence was one of the hot topics of the day. Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen underlined how AI is transforming science. We must accelerate this transformation! With funding from #HorizonEU & the forthcoming AI in Science strategy, she stressed the EU is committed to advance these technologies. Because to secure Europe’s place in a global landscape, we must be bold. The European Research and Innovation Days continue tomorrow, in Brussels and online. Follow here: europa.eu/!YKcBkW

Our new European strategy on research and technology infrastructures is out! 🚀 Europe is taking a key step to strengthen its position as a global leader in science, technology and innovation by boosting its world-class research & technology infrastructures. From top laboratories to pilot lines and scientific equipment – these infrastructures are the backbone of Europe’s research & innovation system. Research infrastructures enable frontier science and produce the reliable data needed to tackle global challenges and fuel deep tech innovation. Technology infrastructures support the development, testing and validation of new technologies, driving industrial competitiveness and Europe’s technological sovereignty. Together, they power the entire innovation cycle from breakthrough discoveries to market-ready solutions. An integrated, open and world-class research and technology infrastructure landscape is a compelling reason for scientists, innovators and entrepreneurs to #ChooseEurope. The strategy sets out actions to: ✅ strengthen Europe’s infrastructures through mobilising investments and capacity building ✅ boost the access of researchers, innovators, startups, scaleups, and industry to state-of-the-art infrastructures ✅ attract and nurture talent at every stage of the innovation chain ✅ improve the governance framework, strengthening the coordination and strategic alignment of infrastructures with EU priorities ✅ reinforce international cooperation while bolstering Europe’s critical data sovereignty Find our new strategy here: link.europa.eu/WrpJ3v

1.2 million people suffer conflict-driven hunger in 2025. The worst struck is Gaza, where the entire population is affected by high levels of acute food insecurity. Worldwide, funding cuts indicate devastating impact to humanitarian response. The new update of the Global Report on Food Crises, published today, rings the alarm on catastrophic food insecurity in Sudan, Gaza, South Sudan, Yemen, Haiti, and Mali. In all six countries / territories the crisis is human-induced, as the ongoing conflicts are the main driver of acute food insecurity. Gaza, South Sudan, and Yemen also have the highest share of their populations suffering from “catastrophic food insecurity”, or IPC Phase 5, the most severe level of acute food insecurity according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification. Our researchers worked closely on this report with the Global Network Against Food Crises, a coalition of development and humanitarian organisations that includes FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the World Food Programme, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, UNICEF and The World Bank. The report's findings are a call to action, emphasising the need for urgent and sustained assistance to address the root causes of food and nutrition insecurity.
