Communities in 🇺🇦 Bucha are finding ways to heal and rebuild. The city of Bucha in Ukraine faces a formidable task: to rebuild its infrastructure while restoring its sense of community. The Bucha Forest Classroom is a local project that shows how both goals can be met by keeping sustainability at its core. Located in a public park, the classroom will enable learning within and about the natural environment. 🐞 Co-designed with students and built using circular materials, the project is supported by Co-Create NEB, a programme by EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology focused on the regeneration of public spaces. 🌻 For the people of Bucha, restoring school facilities is a top priority. Once complete, the Bucha Forest Classroom will offer students a peaceful, open-air space to learn and heal. 🧱 When we renovate the existing built environment through design for adaptability and disassembly, we make room for flexibility, creativity and circularity. Through more sustainable and inclusive renovation of existing buildings, common spaces, and infrastructures, we not only extend their lifespan and minimize waste and environmental impact but also contribute to neighbourhoods that are responsive to community needs and preserve cultural heritage. Under the 🇪🇺 NEB Facility 2025-2027, the topic “Renovating the built environment through design for adaptability and disassembly” invites proposals to develop renovation processes, methods, and techniques to make buildings, common spaces, and infrastructure easier to adapt and repurpose to changing needs and uses, with minimal disruption to their continued use. 📌 Total estimated EU contribution: €12 million for up to 2 projects ⏰ Deadline for submissions: 12 November 2025 Apply here with your project proposal 👉 https://europa.eu/!9MjMq6 #NewEuropeanBauhaus #HorizonEU

A milestone for sustainability and innovation – and a symbol of the New European Bauhaus! The construction of the first net-positive energy building of the European Institutions has officially begun in Seville. This new Joint Research Centre site will not only reduce emissions, it will also generate more renewable energy than it consumes, serving as a model for future buildings across Europe. 👏 Congratulations to everyone involved in this bold step toward a more sustainable built environment - and thank you to the many partners who made it possible! 🎬 Watch the highlights from the inauguration event 👇 #NewEuropeanBauhaus EU Science, Research and Innovation
Last week we celebrated the start of construction of the first net-positive emission building of the European Institutions. I'd like to thank Ursula von der Leyen, Ekaterina Zaharieva and Jessika Roswall for joining us in Seville to mark this milestone. Our new site in Spain will offset CO₂ from the atmosphere by generating excess solar energy. It's a game-changer for EU institutions and a model for future buildings. At the Joint Research Centre, we're no strangers to pushing the boundaries of innovation and sustainability. We're constantly exploring new ways to tackle climate change, and energy scarcity. This new building is just one example of our commitment to walking the talk and leading by example. This ambitious project would not be possible without the support of Spanish and local authorities, which have been key partners for us since the Joint Research Centre first landed in Seville in 1994. My warmest gratitude goes to the mayor of the Ayuntamiento de Sevilla, José Luis Sanz, the president of the Junta de Andalucía Juanma Moreno, Spanish vice-president María Jesús Montero, and ministers Diana Morant Ripoll and José Manuel Albares. And, last but not least, a big thank you to Mikel Landabaso, to the team behind the organisation of this special day, and to the over 400 Joint Research Centre colleagues who work in Seville. I can't wait to be back with you for the inauguration of our new building.

💧How can we reduce our demand for energy, land, water, and other natural resources in the built environment? ⤵️ 🧱 Sufficiency in the built environment has the potential to reduce the need for new construction, cut resource use, lower operational carbon emissions, and lessen the environmental impact of the building sector. Under the 🇪🇺 NEB Facility 2025–2027, the topic “Sufficiency measures in the built environment” aims to test and validate approaches that map vacant or underused buildings, as well as sufficiency strategies that optimise, repurpose, or expand the use and functionality of space. 📌 Total estimated EU contribution: €8 million for up to 2 projects ⏰ Deadline for submissions: 12 November 2025 Apply here 👉 europa.eu/!ggmdnC Sufficiency can also help tackle social challenges like the shortage of affordable housing and reduce infrastructure costs for municipalities. #NewEuropeanBauhaus #HorizonEU
