This morning at Ottawa City Hall, we marked an important milestone for Canada’s capital region: the launch of the Capital Region's National Defence Innovation Hub Strategy. It was a privilege to join Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, Sonya Shorey (President and CEO, Invest Ottawa), Hamid Arabzadeh (RANOVUS Inc.), Glenn Cowan (ONE9), and Michael N. (TACTIQL) for a conversation about how Ottawa–Gatineau can lead Canada’s Defence and dual-use innovation and help drive Canada's Defence Industrial base. A special thank you to The Honourable Jenna Sudds P.C., M.P. for Kanata–Carleton, for her leadership and continued advocacy for her constituents, our region and its critical role in advancing Canada’s defence industry. As an Ottawa-based company with a workforce of almost 1,000 in the region and 4,000 across Canada, including hundreds of military veterans and spouses, Calian Group is proud to be part of the defence industry in Ottawa. We are leading the way in next-generation training, command and control, secure and sovereign communications, and space resource orchestration. Our capital city is where national defence strategy meets commercial innovation, a place uniquely positioned to drive sovereign capability, scale Canadian technology, and create lasting economic impact through collaboration across industry, academia, and government. This isn’t just an opportunity for one or a few large defence primes. Today, Calian announced that CEO Kevin Ford will retire at the end of 2025 after 15 remarkable years with the company, including a decade of record growth as Chief Executive Officer. Under Kevin’s leadership, Calian has transformed into a global provider of mission-critical solutions, expanding into new markets and strengthening our impact across defence, space, healthcare, and critical infrastructure sectors. His vision and commitment to Calian’s people, customers, and partners have shaped who we are today. The Board of Directors has appointed Patrick Houston, currently Chief Financial Officer and Chief Development Officer, as incoming CEO effective January 1, 2026.
