At the International Air Transport Association (IATA) World Sustainability Symposium last week, GlobeScan’s Victoria Gilbert joined CNN anchor and correspondent Kristie Lu Stout for a fireside chat exploring what’s next for sustainability, both for the aviation sector and beyond. Drawing on GlobeScan’s recent survey findings, Victoria shared insights into how people around the world are navigating the tension between feelings of hope and fatigue when thinking about the climate, especially in the context of increasing cost-of-living and other socio-economic pressures. Victoria and Kristie also reflected on how a majority of sustainability leaders believe it’s time for bold, transformative action and had an interactive discussion with the audience on impactful and feasible actions for different stakeholder groups to take. Amid these uncertainties, one message stands out: people continue to care and remain optimistic about shaping a better future. In a world ready for progress, leadership grounded in trust, empathy, and tangible action has never been more important.

Among anticipated personal impacts over the next five years, health stands out as the most concerning consequence of climate change. GlobeScan’s Societal Shift research finds that 45% of people globally anticipate their health will worsen, making it the most widely expected personal consequence of climate change. Personal safety (41%) and emotional well-being (40%) are also significant concerns, while financial impacts are slightly lower (37%). For businesses and activists, this signals a major opportunity: connect climate action to public health. Framing climate change through tangible benefits such as cleaner air, safer water, lower disease risk, makes the issue immediate and relatable, helping to engage people beyond traditional environmental audiences. Hope in the Global South, anxiety in the Global North. GlobeScan's latest research reveals how emotions around the environment differ dramatically worldwide. While innovation, finance, and policy are key to the green transition, real progress depends on public support and emotional engagement. In Africa and the Middle East, people feel hopeful and empowered; in Europe and North America, fear and helplessness dominate. For businesses and governments, this means climate communication can’t be one-size-fits-all. In the Global South, optimism can fuel locally driven solutions. In the Global North, the focus should shift toward stories of action and progress to inspire confidence and agency.
