🔬 New insight into bacterial cell-wall remodeling — revealed through nanoscale imaging Congratulations to Professor Christopher Reid and his team at Bryant University on their new paper “A Lyt at the end of the tunnel? Unraveling the complex interactions of the N-acetylglucosaminidase LytG in cell wall metabolism” published in RSC Chemical Biology #RSCChemBio#RSCChemBio The study used the small-molecule inhibitor masarimycin to block LytG activity in Bacillus subtilis, revealing how cell-wall degradation, elongation, and division processes are tightly connected. Inhibiting LytG caused asymmetric thickening of the cell wall, division-plane mislocalization, and activation of stress responses, offering a fresh view into the mechanics of bacterial growth. We previously had the pleasure of working with Prof. Reid’s group to image B. subtilis cells directly using our Redux AFM. Atomic Force Microscopy provided a unique view of nanoscale surface roughness and morphology changes before and after inhibitor exposure, correlating with the observed thickening of the cell wall in thin-section electron microscopy images. “I was blown away by the quality of these scans and how quickly they were able to be gathered. "The AFM proved to be highly useful for glovebox usage where our polymer electrolyte (unstable in air, hygroscopic) was able to be characterized quickly. We were able to confirm the roughness of the polymer surface without subjecting it to SEM's harsh vacuum, which might introduce artifacts. It is a pleasure using this machine." - Dr. Matthew Li, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) In "Discharge Rate-Driven Li2O2 Growth Exhibits Unconventional Morphology Trends in Solid-State Li-O2 Batteries", researchers at ANL have published new work in Angewandte Chemie International Edition investigating the morphology of lithium peroxide in solid-state Li-O2 batteries using a polymer-based solid electrolyte. With the help of Qianshu W. on site, they were able to set up the nGauge #AFM inside an argon atmosphere glovebox and obtain topographical (left) + phase (right) images to quantitatively characterize the roughness of their polymer electrolyte (top) and gas diffusion layer (bottom)! This allowed them to get a more accurate understanding of their samples without potentially compromising them through exposure to the vacuum needed for #SEM. We are thrilled to welcome Leo Gabriel to the icspi team as Mechatronics Engineer! Leo just wrapped up his degree at the University of Waterloo in Mechatronics Engineering. His most recent internship was at Atomic Semi where we worked on the design, assembly, and automation of semiconductor processing tools. For his final year project, he led the mechanical design and assembly of a tree-climbing robot for environmental monitoring, which he and the rest of his team presented at Open Sauce this year! In his spare team, Leo is an avid squash player. Welcome aboard, Leo!
