Canadians see the importance of being food secure. With an abundance of land and crops, Canada has the potential to strengthen its food sovereignty through increased domestic food processing and ingredient manufacturing. This sector is key to building a stable and resilient food supply chain, one that provides nutritious foods to families across Canada and around the world, while driving economic opportunity here at home. Protein Industries Canada is proud to co-invest into many projects that reinforce our food sovereignty and access to local ingredients and food, alongside Canada's innovative companies. I was happy to contribute to the #foodsystems section in the latest issue of Open Access Government to discuss some of the regulatory challenges affecting the growth of 🍁 Canada’s plant protein sector. https://lnkd.in/gd5eFTyk Two major #regulatory and #policy themes are discussed in the #Canadian 🍁 context for #plantprotein: 💡 Challenges with making “source of protein” claims on plant protein foods; and 💡 Challenges with nomenclature of innovative plant foods, with the appropriate qualifying language All #regulations and #policies require re-evaluation at some point to determine if they are #fitforpurpose in the context of today’s #foodsystem. #Reguatlorymodernization and the adoption of policies that allow all agri-food sectors to thrive, compete, and communicate with consumers is critical. #Canada is a strong food innovator with a robust and safe food system. But success also requires pathways to commercialization that include the ability to safely communicate with #consumers. In Canada, protein from plants and animals is an “and” proposition, where both sources can provide value to #healthy #dietarypatterns. #Protein continues to be contentious. But it does not need to be. All sectors can thrive, where inclusive and fair regulations will only strengthen Canada’s food sector. We recently announced five projects as part of the Strengthening the Canadian Supply Chain program. Plant Up, one of the successful companies in the first program cohort, is scaling and reformulating their fava and pea-based snack puffs. This will allow them to improve the products’ texture, nutrition and production efficiency, boosting the company’s competitiveness and supporting Canadian pulse crops. Here's CEO Aamir Malkani speaking on the company's growth since collaborating with Protein Industries Canada and industry partners.
