This month, Mastercard Foundation President and CEO, Reeta Roy, and Director of Gender Programs, M. Esther Dassanou, joined the Graça Machel Trust WCW 2025 Summit, where women entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and ecosystem builders from across Africa shared insights to accelerate inclusive growth, job creation, and intergenerational wealth. Conversations at the Summit reinforced that inclusive growth depends on placing women at the center of economic transformation. When women have access to opportunities to build and scale businesses, they help drive education, enable jobs, and advance poverty alleviation across their communities.
Yesterday, we had the privilege of witnessing a refreshingly candid conversation between two remarkable leaders, Theo Sowa, CEO of GMT and Reeta Roy, President and CEO of the Mastercard Foundation as they explored what it truly takes to drive sustained impact across the continent. The session, Value-Based Leadership: A Refreshingly Candid Conversation Between Two Leaders, reminded us that leadership is never a solo journey. It’s about courage, humility, and intentionally surrounding yourself with people who challenge, support, and inspire you. Theo reflected on the profound influence of mentorship and intergenerational guidance, sharing how leaders like Wangarĩ Maathai, Leymah Gbowee, and Mrs Graça Machel modeled leadership rooted in values, vision, and action. “True leadership isn’t positional or defined by titles, it’s about what you do, how you do it, and the values you live by.” Theo said. Reeta shared her journey from the private sector into civil society, emphasizing that growth is a leap of faith, “Growth or undertaking any kind of major goal is not a solo act. It’s the work of many people and part of that journey is bringing people with you.” She said. She also spoke on the courage required to learn from mistakes, stating there’s always a come back. Even from moments that feel like there’s no way forward. Together, they explored the power of values in today’s rapidly changing world, reminding us that values are not just words. They live in our minds, but mostly in our behavior and in our actions. From honoring the lessons of our mothers to leading with both head and heart, their conversation was a masterclass in human-centered leadership. #WomenCreatingWealth #WCWSummit #BreakingBarriers #Leadership #GraçaMachelTrust #ValuesInAction #Inspiration #AfricaRising #GMT15 #15YearsOfImpact

Mastercard Foundation reposted this
Last week at the Women’s Creating Wealth Summit, I had the honor of participating in a vibrant gathering that brought together women of all ages—from adolescent girls to seasoned leaders. The energy was invigorating and exciting as we celebrated our progress. Reflecting on the past, thirty years ago at Beijing, we could not have imagined the emergence of women-centered investment clubs in South Africa, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire, or the development of financial programs specifically for women. Today, we see policies that enhance women’s access to finance, and women and young women are leading innovation in conservation, agriculture, technology, and more. Meeting icons like Mama Grade Machel, Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and Aisha Ahmad reminded me of the trailblazers who paved the way for us. It is now our responsibility to carry the torch. The work ahead is significant; we must intentionally place women, especially young women, at the center of our efforts. Designing for young women ultimately benefits everyone by removing barriers that affect all. I left the summit feeling re-energized and hopeful. This journey is not just about feeling good; it’s about transforming the landscape so that every young woman and girl can step confidently into the world they deserve. Congratulations to Korkor Cudjoe Shiphra Chisha(M.Inst.D),MBA, Andia Laura Chakava, and the Graça Machel Trust and the @Women Creating Wealth team for their remarkable work and excellent gathering. A Luta continua!

Did you know that approximately 60% of investment funds focused on Africa are registered outside the continent? This limits capital flow into African markets and makes it harder for MSMEs, especially youth-led businesses, to access affordable finance. Join the Youth Dome, in partnership with Momentus Global, Stafford Law, Samawati Capital Partners, MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Associates), and the Mastercard Foundation, for an interactive youth-focused webinar to unpack fund domiciliation. We will explore the barriers, highlight opportunities for reform, and collect real stories from young entrepreneurs, fund managers, and policymakers to help shape Africa’s investment future. Date: October 23, 2025 Time: 12 pm GMT -13:30 pm GMT Register here: https://ow.ly/tW6Q50XfIKO
