The official account for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
About us
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 and entered into force on 29 December 1993. It is the first global agreement to cover all aspects of biological diversity: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), based in Montreal, Canada, was established to support the goals of the Convention. Its primary functions are to organize meetings, prepare reports, assist member governments in the implementation of the various programmes of work, coordinate with other international organizations and collect and disseminate information.

At #FSCGA2025 in Panama City, where the first meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) and other provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity related to indigenous peoples and local Communities #SB8J_1 is taking place this week, the alignment between the Forest Stewardship Council’s objectives and those of UN Biodiversity came to the fore. Action for forests that empowers indigenous peoples and local communities underpins the achievement of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF.
Looking ahead — together. Day 3 of the FSC General Assembly 2025 turned our focus to the future. The plenary explored FSC’s evolving role in climate and biodiversity as we prepare the 2027–2032 Global Strategy — reflecting on lessons learned, future direction, and how responsible forest management can strengthen resilience in a changing world. Insights from social, economic, and environmental perspectives highlighted ways to amplify the true value of forests. We heard from experts such as: ✅ Christina Niemelä Ström, Head of Sustainability at IKEA ✅ Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, President of the Indigenous Women & Peoples Association of Chad and Chair of the FSC Indigenous Foundation ✅ Joeri Zwerts, assistant professor at Utrecht University Beyond the plenary, side meetings looked ahead to future visions for forestry, updates to FSC standards, and the role of youth in shaping our next chapter. 📍Did you know that the FSC GA 2025 Poster Exhibition is available online? The new ISO 17298:2025 Biodiversity Standard provides organizations worldwide with a consistent framework to identify and manage their biodiversity dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities — helping translate global goals into measurable results. By supporting Target 15 of the #KMGBF, this standard helps integrate biodiversity into corporate governance, risk management, and disclosure processes. With sector-specific guidance and practical implementation tools coming soon, this standard gives organizations the framework to make credible, nature-positive decisions that can help reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. The first meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) opened yesterday in Panama City, marking a significant step toward strengthening the full and effective participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in the work of the Convention. As noted by Co-chair Irene Vélez-Torres, the establishment of #SB8J reflects an unprecedented step toward greater environmental democracy within the United Nations, signalling a new phase of cooperation grounded in respect, equity and shared stewardship. This spirit of collective purpose was reinforced by Briseida Iglesias López de Guerrero, who emphasized that the knowledge, strength and cultural heritage passed down through generations will guide efforts to safeguard biodiversity and the ways of life intertwined with it. Building on this message, UN Biodiversity Executive Secretary Astrid Schomaker underlined that the Convention has reached a watershed moment — one in which indigenous peoples and local communities must be recognized as partners on the pathway to living in harmony with nature, as envisioned by the #KMGBF. The importance of translating this commitment into meaningful results on the ground was highlighted by Juan Carlos Navarro, Minister of Environment of Panama, who stressed that success will be measured by practical policies, accessible financing and concrete outcomes that protect ancestral lands and strengthen biodiversity conservation. This shared resolve was reflected as well in the cultural opening, featuring the Guna performance “Mugan Boe” (The Grandmothers’ Lament) by the USKALU, honouring living heritage and the deep connections between people and nature that this meeting seeks to recognize and uphold.
