We advocate for animals through photojournalism. We expose. We educate. We empower.

About us

Founded by award-winning photojournalist Jo-Anne McArthur, We Animals advocates for animals through photojournalism. Now with over 120 international photographers, our global investigations and stories expose our complex relationships with animals, create ethical and cultural shifts in society, and empower human capacity for compassion and change. The We Animals stock site, with over 30,000 visuals, serves as a free, preeminent global resource for anyone helping animals: academics, campaigners, journalists, researchers, and writers. Our ground-breaking animal photojournalism supports the efforts of advocacy communities at large and facilitates changes in attitudes and behaviours more broadly. We understand that seeing is a crucial component of the diverse efforts necessary to erode and eventually end the abuse of animals.

  • Helicopters chase wild horses and burros across public lands, part of a federal program that has strayed far from its original intent to protect them. The Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 has been modified to allow federal agents to capture these animals, appeasing cattle ranchers who regularly voice concerns that equines interfere with their businesses. Helicopters force mustangs and burros into capture, and in 2024, the US Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) held more than 64,000 animals. The BLM’s adoption program has been exploited by kill-buyers who sell the animals for slaughter. • Animals need great lawyers on their side. That’s why we’re grateful for the legal experts at Harvard University (Brooks McCormick Jr. Animal Law & Policy Program at Harvard Law School, Kelley McGill, and Ann Linder) who recently analyzed the “Save Our Bacon Act (H.R. 4673)," a bill introduced in the U.S. Congress in July. The report sheds light on the far-reaching consequences this legislation could have for animals, consumers, and the environment. Read the Report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/efNu_e7e We Animals was proud to support this important work with photographs gathered over years of documenting life inside these industries, visual evidence that helps inform the public and the policymakers shaping our food systems. 📷: An aerial view of flooded CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) farms in North Carolina, USA. • While Finland tops global happiness charts, life in the sea cages of a fish farm remains cruel and grim. An investigation into 12 Finnish inshore trout farms revealed fish in barren, overcrowded cages who were unable to swim to the sea floor, seek shelter, or move to areas with better oxygen levels or temperature. Many individuals had untreated injuries or advanced illnesses. Dead fish were left to decompose alongside the living, and numerous dead gulls and herons were documented tangled in nets. According to Natural Resources Institute #Finland, rainbow trout account for 95 percent of the country's farmed fish, with 14.4 million kilograms produced in 2023. The farms investigated represent approximately 10 percent of the country’s marine-based fish farms. Witness the conditions for yourself. Share them with others. ➡️ The investigation visuals are now available on the We Animals stock platform: https://lnkd.in/eQRCvE92

  • Transport can be highly distressing for farmed animals, with exposure to loud noise, little space, extreme weather and long periods without food, water or rest. Inside small metal trailers, cows stood on floors slick with excrement as they anxiously peered through narrow openings. Photographer Tom Wollard captured these images at #LindenFoods slaughterhouse in England during an Animal Save Movement vigil where people bear witness to animals’ last moments. ➡️ These visuals, as well as their metadata, are newly available on the We Animals stock platform for your advocacy: https://lnkd.in/ej3XCjPF

Your Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) can help change the world for animals. 🧡 This Thursday, October 9, is #DAFDay, a day to celebrate one of the easiest and fastest-growing ways to give. If you are US-based and have a DAF, this is a perfect time to support We Animals and help us keep documenting and sharing the stories of animals worldwide. Making a gift is simple: through our fiscal sponsor, Karuna Foundation (Tax ID: 85-4026412), just mention We Animals in your request. Your support makes animal photojournalism possible and ensures these stories continue to reach the world. Questions? We’d love to help → [email protected]

  • Dr Jane Goodall was proof that one person can change the way the world sees animals. Immeasurably so. Jane, the eminent primatologist, has died at the age of 91. Her life’s work reshaped how the world understands chimpanzees, inspired generations of women to pursue science and animal activism, and, more recently, urged people to confront the sentience of farmed animals and the realities of factory farming. “You cannot share your life in a meaningful way with a dog, a cat, a rabbit, a rat, a bird, a horse, a pig, I don’t care, and not know that they have emotions similar to ours and that they have minds that can sometimes solve problems,” she said. She made it clear that the lives of animals matter, not only those we revere, but those we exploit. We at We Animals were fortunate to be personally influenced by Jane’s example and encouragement, to have worked with her and her team, and to have had her support and belief in our work. With her passing, we honour her call: to act with hope, and to help create a kinder, more compassionate world. Photo: Jane Goodall speaking in Toronto. Canada, 2010. • Animals have a lot to say about their experiences, relationships, and lives, but to reach larger and influential human audiences, it is often up to members of our species to magnify, amplify, translate, and champion these stories. We're thrilled to join Animal Justice at their Animal Law and Advocacy Conference this weekend. Our founder, Jo-Anne McArthur, will join Kendra Coulter and 🍁Sangita Iyer 🐘 (B.Sc. M.A.)🐘🍁for a multi-media roundtable: The Power(s) of Animals’ Stories. We look forward to seeing you there - to connect, exchange ideas, and learn together in person: https://lnkd.in/eB5K2M7f

  • As a fully remote team spread across time zones, we cherish the rare moments when we can come together in person. This year, we gathered in nature, on a lake in beautiful cottage country, Canada, to connect, reflect, and map out our contributions to the animal rights movement over the next three years. Meeting as a team felt like both a necessity and a luxury. We had important conversations. Difficult conversations. Conversations about how we can best support the movement and most effectively advocate for animals through photojournalism. We also had fun. We danced, we laughed, and we shared the most delicious vegan meals. We left energized, inspired, and more aligned. A heartfelt thank you to We Animals’ supporters, allies, and funders who made this nature-filled strategy week possible. We’re excited to share what’s ahead. Moments captured by Hailey Oldfield.

  • Every year, millions of cows, pigs, and other farmed animals endure grueling journeys across the United States. The Twenty-Eight-Hour Law requires that, after 28 hours of transport, animals must be unloaded, fed, and given water. The law is rarely enforced. A new report from the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), illustrated with images from the We Animals stock platform (by Jo-Anne McArthur Wes Burdett and Louise Scott-Jorgensen), investigates how the USDA has handled enforcement since 2006. The findings are clear: stronger oversight is urgently needed. 📑 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eF7D7U4D

  • Ucluelet Aquarium on Vancouver Island in Canada houses local marine species temporarily before releasing them at season’s end. Cynthia Hughes documents life at the aquarium, which is positioned as an "ethical alternative" to permanent captivity but raises important questions about stress caused by confinement, handling, and public display - particularly for intelligent, sensitive species like the octopus. ➡️ These visuals are now available on the We Animals stock platform for your advocacy: https://lnkd.in/et9ZipCH
