Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer significant environmental and social benefits in addition to real economic value. The EU estimates that every euro invested in nature restoration can generate up to 38 euros in returns, from flood protection to cleaner air. Yet, despite their clear advantages, NbS are still not being funded at the needed scale. Mobilising capital for NbS through impact bonds presents a promising way forward. Sustainability-linked finance (SLF) offers a promising pathway to close the gap in corporate financing for climate change adaptation by linking borrowing costs to climate-resilience performance. However, current instruments fall short of their potential. Furthermore, private actors face a conundrum: how to price, prioritise and operationalise adaptation when climate risk is uncertain, future-oriented and poorly rewarded by markets. This paper addresses that challenge by exploring how SLF can serve as an effective mechanism to realign financial incentives and unlock firm-level innovation in climate resilience. Authors: Jose L.
