“Brian is one-of-a-kind. He has a brilliance that I have watched him adapt seamlessly to any interdisciplinary team he is on, be it focused on children's health or psychology or computer science. He's a joy to work with, as he loves ideas far too much to go to war over them. His understanding of theory is as helpful as it is humbling. And I'm proud to say he has been my PhD advisor over the last 6 years. Most of what I know about researching and publishing in an interdisciplinary field I learned from Brian. And now as an industry researcher, I look back with something like nostalgia on my time as Brian's Graduate Research Assistant. They were some of the happiest days in my career.”

The Council collectively represents the academic research and private sector R&D communities in natural sciences and engineering, as well as other stakeholder groups in the Canadian innovation system. The Council’s main responsibilities are to set the strategy and high level policies for NSERC, and to review and evaluate performance. The Council works to achieve the maximum strategic impact for Canada from the expenditure of public funds, and to advance Canada’s research and development agenda.
The Council approves funding allocations to broad program areas for grants, scholarships and fellowships. The responsibility for reviewing applications rests with NSERC’s various selection committees. Council members are not normally involved in these reviews. However, the Council may be asked, on an exceptional basis, to give final approval on certain awards.
The Council is advised on policy and programming matters by standing committees that are responsible for overseeing, where appropriate, the work of selection committees and panels. The committee structure adopted by the Council enables it to devote most of its deliberations to broad policies, strategic direction and financial issues.

VACCINE’s mission focuses on creating methods, tools, and applications to transform vast amounts of data into useable and actionable information for a range of applications, from public safety and homeland security to logistics planning to sustainability and agriculture.
Center strengths include:
Integrated program of research, education, and outreach: VACCINE’s work spans the disciplines of visualization and computer graphics, engineering, computer science, geographic information systems, cognitive psychology, information technology, and emergency management and public safety.
Broad network of schools: VACCINE is the headquarters of a network of 38 partner universities, both domestic and international, dedicated to turning massive data into actionable knowledge through innovative visual analytics techniques.
Extensive end-user community: Our Center has a strong, collaborative history of and experience in working with end-users to solve their real-world problems:
VACCINE has worked with more than half of the agencies within the Department of Homeland Security and has MOUs (memorandums of understanding) with more than 50 different law enforcement agencies.
VACCINE has actively engaged communities, growers, producers, and sustainability associations to develop roadmaps and transition science and technology into economic and environmental sustainable solutions across the U.S. and in South America.
This community of end-user collaboration results in VACCINE’s research producing robust tools that are currently in use by law enforcement, first responders, and homeland security personnel across the country.
Transitioning technology to general users: VACCINE transitions technology and tools from the research lab to local, statewide, and national users, with lasting impacts. -
